A new opportunity...

I am leaving the Decatur office for a better opportunity. June 1, I will be back in the Huntsville newsroom. I am excited about it! I've been a bureau chief for 5 years and I felt it was time to move on. While I'm not changing television stations, I am changing scenery. I will be doing investigative reporting plus I'll have more opportunities to anchor, which is my passion.

I will keep you posted!

Just when you think its over...

More drama surrounding Mary Winkler.

Today we learned that the sentencing hearing for Mary has been rescheduled due to an attorney conflict. The date was originally set for May 18th.
Also, attorney's for Mary Winkler are filing a motion to keep her from serving any more time behind bars.
Winkler's lawyers are asking for a "judicial diversion." That means the judge would wipe her record clean and sentence her to probation only.
Earlier this month, a jury convicted Winkler of voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death of her husband, Matthew. She faces between 3 and 6 years in prison
The parents of Matthew Winkler have filed a petition to terminate Mary Winkler's parental rights and to adopt the children of Matthew and Mary.

I'll post more as this story develops. Also, my opinion is still in draft form. I"ll be launching it soon!

Winkler Verdict.. opinion still in the works

I haven't posted my opinion on the Winkler case yet but I'm working on it. I should have it on the website by the end of the week.

I have been asked to interview for the Oxygen series "Snapped." This will be my first sit-down talk since the Winkler case began. I will be discussing the case and the media interest surrounding it. Of course, I will not be giving my opinion on the verdict. The segment will air sometime in October or November. I'll keep you posted.

Thank you...

I wanted to thank all of you who have been faithful to keep up with my daily ramblings on the Mary Winkler trial. I had no idea my site would become this popular. You have left many kind messages and I truly appreciate your thoughts and opinions.

At the end of the day, Matthew's family came out and read a written statement to a sea of cameras. Dan Winkler, perhaps the most kind and humble speaker, talked briefly thanking everyone involved in the case for their hard work. He thanked the jury and thanked God for being their "rock and our shield" during the trial. He also comment that they will treasure the memory that Matthew had for his family, his church and his Lord.

Mary's attorney's talked mainly about the case but also wanted to express their sympathy to the Winkler's.

I need a break from this trial coverage. I will be leaving Corinth, Mississippi tomorrow morning for a weekend of well deserved rest. I'm going to visit my parents and unwind. I will give you my opinion on this case soon. Stay tuned to read my unofficial ramblings.

Guilty...Voluntary Manslaughter

Just after 5 tonight, the jury found Mary Winkler guilty of voluntary manslaughter. She could spend 3-6 years in jail or 1-3 years with probation. Her attorney's call this "justice served."

The Winklers were obviously upset but humble. They made a brief statement to the media asking us to respect the privacy of the family and the couple's 3 daughters. They wanted to thank everyone for their prayers and concerns. They ask that you continue to pray for everyone concerned.

Mary's facial expression never changed. She was like stone while the judge read her punishment. The Winkler's made no obvious outbursts. It was quiet as a mouse in the courtroom, even after the verdict was read.

Mary will be sentenced May 18 at 9 am.

More later...

Nothing yet...

The jury is still deliberating. They came out shortly after lunch to ask the judge a question. No idea how long it will be until we get a verdict. Hopefully, soon.

Remember, you can watch the verdict live by logging on to waff.com. We are streaming the entire trial and jury process as it goes.

More later...

We wait...

The jury is now deliberating the fate of Mary Winkler. The judge charged the jury around 8:15 this morning. He struck 3 from the panel, a black male, a black female and a white female. That leaves a total of 12, 10 women, 2 men, all white.

Mary left shortly after the case was handed over. She is staying at a friend's house here in Selmer. The Winkler family left as well. We do not know where the are staying until a verdict is reached.

I'll continue blogging the proceedings. Check back later for a verdict.

Also, when this is "all said and done" I will give you my take on the case, Mary's testimony, and whether or not I agree with the verdict this jury hands down.

Is she or isn't she?

Closing arguments are about to wrap up. The case will then go to a jury for deliberation. They will decide if Mary Winkler intentionally shot and killed her husband or if it was an accident. If she's convicted of first-degree murder, she faces life in prison with parole. She could also be found guilty of a lesser punishment.
A whirlwind of testimony today. The Winkler's former friend, Brandy McAlister Jones took the stand and testified that Matthew had taken Mary to the firing range and taught her to shoot a gun, blowing a hole in Mary's testimony that she had never picked one up.
I'll have more to blog on this later...

More Mary...

It's been a long morning of testimony in the Mary Winkler murder trial. On the stand, she accused her husband of punching and kicking her, forcing her to have sex and refusing to grant her a divorce.

Mary told jurors her husband, Matthew was a smart and talented man, but could also be mean in both his actions and words.

Prosecutors paint a very different picture of the Church of Christ minster, with witnesses describing Matthew as a good father and husband.

Mary testified this morning that Matthew kicked her in the face during an arguement. She also says he hit her in the face, pushed her down and hit her with a belt.

Mary also told jurors Matthew kept her away from her family and criticized her appearance. She also eluded to sexual abuse while on the stand.

Currently, prosecutors are cross examining Mary.

Here we go again...

The court is back in session after a 30 minute break. Families on both sides of the courtroom appear tired and worried. I have seen no interaction between the Freemans and the Winklers. This is certainly a courtroom divided.

Mary is back on the stand. The jury is being seated. Her attorney, Steve Farese is getting ready to question his client. Mary sits with her head bowed and her hands covering her eyes. Mr. Farese just told her it's ok to hold her head up while testifiying. He's handed Mary another piece of evidence to examine. It's a document containing photographs. She is thumbing through the photos. Mary says she's seen the pictures before at their home. The pictures were on the couple's computer and that Matthew was constantly on the internet. When Mary would walk in the room, he would click the screen blank, as to hide whatever it was he was viewing. Now Mr. Farese is showing Mary a photo. Their are shoes in the photo similar to the "hooker shoes" brought into evidence this morning.

The judge has called the attorney's to the stand. Mary is thumbing through the photographs again. She just testified to the images found on Matthew's home computer. The "hooker shoe" and wig from earlier are now entered into evidence. The photos were given to the jury to view.

Keep in mind, this is Mary's testimony. Matthew is dead so he can't speak for himself.

Graphic testimony from Mary Winkler...

Mary Winkler is currently on the stand testifiying in her own murder trial. She's dressed differently than what we have been seeing the last 2 weeks. She's wearing a printed dress and a white sweater. Slightly more conservative than the business suits she wore in the beginning. She has on no makeup and her hair is a little messy.

So far, Mary's testified to physical, emotional and sexual abuse. She told jurors she demanded a divorce from Matthew but that he put his foot down and said no. Her attorney brought out a Wal-Mart bag containing evidence. The bag contained a pair of 3" heels, the type you might see strippers wearing and a brown wig. Winkler's testimony is that Matthew liked for her to dress in a provocative manner for sexual purposes. She also testified that Matthew forced her to watch pornographic images on their home computer. Winkler also told the court that her marriage has been in trouble from the very beginning and only got worse through the years.

Her father and adopted siblings are in the courtroom. They were crying as they listened to Mary's story. Matthew's parents, grandmothers and brother are on the other side of the courtroom. They have sat quietly through this morning's testimony.

The court is in a 10 minute recess. I will post more soon.

Today's testimony...

The Defense called their first witness to the stand this morning, an agent with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. Several character witnesses are also expected to be called today. Also, Mary Winkler could take the stand late this afternoon but most likely tomorrow.

Don't forget our neighbors in Virginia. They are going through a terrible time right now.

I'll post more as the day goes on.

Not a dry eye in the place...

Today, Matthew and Mary Winkler's oldest daughter, Patricia took the stand in her mother's murder trial. The courtroom was packed, standing room only. Patricia walked in, sat down at the witness stand and told the judge she knew the difference in telling the truth and telling a lie. What a remarkable little girl. She broke down in the very beginning but pulled herself together. She did a really good job answering attorney's questions. When she began crying, everyone in the room, cried with her. I can't imagine what she and her sisters have gone through. I hope I never know.

Patricia testified that she heard a loud boom the morning her dad died. She went to her parent's bedroom and found Matthew, face down on the floor. He was still alive. Mary left town with the children. When she was arrested the next day, she turned custody over to Matthew's parents. The girls are still with them today. Mary's attorney's claim the Winkler's won't let the girls visit Mary. Diane Winkler testified today the girls don't want to see her. Isn't it sad what one mistake has done to shatter so many lives?

The prosecution finished calling its witnesses today. The defense will start their testimony tomorrow.

Quick notes concerning trial coverage...

Mary Winkler's trial starts bright and early Monday morning. We will be set up at the courthouse again. The prosecution is expected to wrap its testimony tomorrow.

I'll be able to use my lap top to blog tomorrow. Our sat truck operator, Mark, is bringing a wireless internet card. That should help speed things along a bit. Be sure to check back for the latest.

Not your typical Saturday...

Little did I know earlier in the week that I would still be here in Selmer on Saturday covering Mary Winkler's trial. The judge wants to move through the testimony so the case can go to the jury for deliberation.

Testimony moved at a good pace this morning. 4 people took the stand before lunch. 3 bank tellers testified that Mary was in financial trouble and that the bank had caught her trying to deposit bad checks. Prosecutors say the Winkler's bank account at Regions in Selmer was overdrawn by $5,000, and that bank employees called Mary several times in the days before Matthew's death. Prosecutors have said Mary was caught up in a swindle knows as the "Nigerian scam." Defense argues the Winkler's were in on the scam together.

I reported Friday the Winkler's oldest daughter Patricia was expected to be called to the stand today. We have been told that won't happen until sometime next week.

Security at the courthouse has been tightened. Someone called in a threat against Winkler. That's something to expect in cases like this.

The courtroom is packed with people today. The Winkler family, with the exception of Matthew's mother and children are present. Several friends of Mary's are sitting on the other side of the courtroom. Her father is not here. He could possibly be called to testify. If that's the case, he won't be allowed in the courtroom until after his testimony.

Expected to take the stand later today, 2 more finacial guru's and an expert in firearms.

More later...

The Mary Winkler Trial...Thursday and Friday

Sorry for not continuing my post from Thursday. I have only one computer in our satellite truck. The connection runs slow so I have trouble posting to my blog. Please be patient. I'll write as I can.

Today, was a long, long day of the same testimony over and over and over again. Alabama Bureau of Investigation agent Steve Stabler was on the stand for 6 1/2 hours. He is the person who interviewed Mary the night she was arrested. He taped the interview, which was played in court today. Mary admitted on tape that she shot Matthew. She says the couple was having domestic conflicts that finally reached a "boiling point." In her taped statement, Mary goes on to say that Matthew had threatened her. She had threatened him over the course of their marriage. She snapped. She also defends Matthew by saying she loved him dearly but he "nailed her in the ground." Never once in the nearly hour long interview did she ever ask police if Matthew was ok. Finally at the end, Stabler asked if she wanted to know about him. She began sobbing but didn't say anything. He told her Matthew was dead. She asked if he was at the funeral home.

Matthew's family was in court today. His father, grandmother, uncle, aunt, brother and sister-in-law. None of Mary's family was in court. Only the person she lives with, Kathy Tompson. Mary cried, really cried, for the first time since this ordeal began. She looks tired and stressed out. Her face is hard, her eyes filled with worry. If you look at her now compared to just a few short years ago, it seems like a completely different person. It's hard to not feel sorry for her. She felt their was no way out and for some reason did not want to leave him. Only Mary knows exactly what happened that morning.

Matthew and Mary's oldest daughter, Patricia, is expected to testify sometime tomorrow. She is the only witness to the crime. While she didn't see anything, she is old enough to know what happened to her daddy. That is the saddest part to this entire wasteful tragedy. The children are without a father and without a mother. In court Thursday, one of the attorney's mentioned that Patricia "hates her mother." The children have had very little contact with her since Matthew's death. They are in good hands with Dan and Diane Winkler. They are the only one's who might be able to help them through this. Mary knows that and told police she wanted them to take the children.

The defense argues Mary accidentally shot Matthew. Prosecutors say that's impossible. The defense is hinging there case on abuse, emotional and physical. Prosecutors don't buy it. They say she killed Matthew because she was caught in a check-kiting scam and didn't want Matthew to find out.

So many of you have made kind comments about my blogging of the trial. Thank you so much! This is a difficult situation. This is the first time I've ever covered a trial that I knew the person who is accused in the case. I try to be fair to both sides.

We will be leaving Saturday afternoon to head back home and wash clothes and rest. Lord willing, we will return on Sunday and start it all over for another week.

Have a safe weekend and I will post more tomorrow!

Day 1 of Mary Winkler's Trial...

We are waiting for Mary Winkler's trial to start at the McNairy County Courthouse. She is sitting in court with her attorneys. Mary is wearing a dark pant suit with a white shirt underneath. She has a cross around her neck and continues to wear her wedding ring. She has on no make up. Mary shows no emotion as she waits for her trial to begin.

The courtroom is packed with friends and family of Matthew and Mary Winkler. However, Matthew's parents are not in court. His brother Daniel, wife Holly, uncle Mike Winkler and Matthew's grandmother are here too. Mary's father Clark Freeman is sitting behind Mary in the courtroom. So is Kathy Thompson, a family friend who Mary is currently living with.

The judge is now seated at the bench. I will blog more once opening arguments begin.

Opening statements...

Jury selection is over. 12 women and 4 men were chosen to hear the case.
Those serving on the jury range in age from 20-65. They are from different religious backgrounds. None of the jurors are affiliated with the Church of Christ. 14 are white, 2 are black.

If you want to watch live video of the trial, Court TV will be carrying the trial. You can also watch streaming video on their website.

I'll post more tomorrow.

Day 2 and 3 combined...The Winkler Trial

Sorry for this late post. The internet connection we have in our satellite truck is slow, partly due to the cloudy and rainy weather this morning. I've been sick with a sore throat since Monday and didn't feel much like pulling my lap top out at the hotel.

Day 2 of jury selection gave us a little better idea into what Mary's defense will be in her first-degree murder trial. Here are some of the questions her attorney's asked a pool of some 160 potential jurors. "Is battered spouse syndrome a myth or a reality? Have you ever known anyone who suffered memory loss from a traumatic event?" They also asked about brainwashing tactics and why someone would stay in an abusive relationship. Mary's defense team is even suggestiong the shooting may have been accidental.

We were told late Tuesday afternoon that jury selection is moving at a good clip. Possibly by the end of today, a panel of 12 juoros with 4 alternates will be seated. Opening arguments could start as late as this afternoon but most likely Thursday morning.

So far, Mary hasn't said a word. Her facial expression is the same everyday. She comes prepared to court wearing a nice pants outfit. She carries a brief case over flowing with paper work in her right hand. Her wedding ring remains on her left finger. Incidentally, she is staying in Corinth, MS in the hotel next door to where we are staying. Yesterday, her attorney's took her to a restaraunt here in Selmer for lunch. They ate in the back with a curtain up around the table.

Today, its rainy and messy. Most all of the media has tents set up to keep equipment dry. We look like squatters :) Court TV ran the last of their cables into the courtroom. They will serve as the pool camera for all of the media outlets. That is the way we have been doing it from the very start. The courtroom itself is very small so only one tv camera is allowed. The judge is good to let the media have access to his courtroom. So long as we follow his rules, we shouldn't have any problems.

I've been asked by several television stations, including Court TV to do an interview since I went to college with Matt and Mary. I politely decline each offer. I don't feel its right for me to say anything about this case of Matt and Mary. I'm a journalist covering a murder trial. I try to keep my feelings and opinions to myself.

I will post more as the information becomes available. Check back often for updates.

Have a safe day everyone!

Hurry Up and WAIT!!!

Sunday night, I got to Corinth around 7:00. Our sat truck operator, Mark was already here. Juergen had to work late but came up when he finsihed.

After a good night's sleep, we left our hotel early and drove to Selmer (about 30 minutes away). This is picture I took from a monitor in our truck. It's a little blurry but you get the picture -- no pun intended. This is Mary Winkler and her attorneys, Steve Farese on the right and Leslie Ballin on the left.

Mary doesn't even look like the same person I went to college with. She has the most stone cold look on her face. The Mary I remember was a sweet girl, with a shy personality. She was always smiling and appeared to be a happy person. You can't see it in this picture, but she continues to wear her wedding band.

Matthew Winkler's murder has generated a lot of local and national publicity. This is a just a fraction of the media covering his widow's trial. The rest, like Court TV will set up tomorrow and stay until it is over. I always like mingling with other reporters and photographers from out of town. Most of them are cool and usually everyone works well together.

I snapped this photo of Juergen just before we went on the air at 5. You can't see me but I'm standing in front of the camera.

I hope we get to stay until the trial is over but it depends on the powers that be. if they choose to bring us home, not much we can do about it.

I'll be posting updates. Be patient. I've got a slow internet connection. Selmer, TN has very little coverage so cell phones and lap tops don't always work.

Be safe!

High on Lookout Mountain...

Yesterday, I left the River City for the mountains of Chattanooga. It was such a beautiful drive through Scottsboro, Bridgeport, Stevenson, etc. If nothing else, it was nice just being away from work for a day. It takes about 2 1/2 hours to get there but the drive is worth it. 4 lane all the way!

This is going to be a busy next few days for me. Saturday, my mother and daddy are coming to Athens. I'll be in Hartselle staying with my brother's 2 youngest children while they are in Nashville. Sunday, mom, dad and I will go out for lunch after church. Then, I'm leaving Sunday night headed to Corinth, MS. Monday morning, Mary Winkler's trial starts in Selmer. It's going to be a media circus, that is for sure! I'm hoping everything will wrap up in a few short days. It may take longer than that. I just hope we are home by the end of the week.

Can you believe all this chilly weather? Thankfully, my pepper and tomato plants are inside with the heat on. They are thriving quiet nicely! I hope to be making salsa by summer time.

Hope all of you are doing well! Have a great weekend!

Miscellaneous Ramblings...

It's nearly midnight. I've had a busy day. I got up and went to church. Then I drove to Madison to meet my brother, sister-in-law and the kids. We ate lunch at Bellicino's (yum) then went bicycle shopping. Unfortunately, we didn't find bikes for Brad or John. I know they were disappointed.

I had to pick up something at Wal-Mart to stick my tomatoe plants. I rigged up two slender wooden dowles on either side of each plant and fastened them with zip ties. My plants are nice and straight now. They look really good. I haven't set them outside yet because the birds like to pick the blooms off. I don't want to have to posion them (the plants) either. They are sitting in the window in my upstairs bedroom. Hopefully, they are getting enough sun to help them continue growing.

Finally I see green!!! My pepper plants are sprouting. Before long, I should have jalapenos, bell peppers and banana peppers.

I'm off Monday and Tuesday. I am trying to get caught up with a project and I needed some time away from work before Mary Winkler's trial. I've got plans Easter weekend so she better get a move on it!!! I don't see the point in wasting tax dollars for a trial. She admitted she shot her husband then left with the girls. She's not eligiable for the death penalty or life without so what does she have to worry about? She'll probably sale her story and make millions. I wonder who Hollywood would get to play the part?

My grandmother is in Birmingham having some heart tests run. She's having a few problems with her aortic valve. I sure hope she gets a good report but I'm worried the doctors might find something worse. She's a trooper that's for sure. In all my years, I've never heard my grandmother complain once about not feeling well. She broke her leg once and set it herself and somehow managed to get back home from the barn. She's a very independent woman with a head like concrete. I've been told I have that same hard head :) I'll never be the woman that she is, but I hope I have a little of her gutsy ways in my blood.

Hope everyone had a good weekend! More later...

Thank's Uncle Sam...

I received my income tax check this morning! I used it to pay off a loan at the bank. Now the only "big" bill I have is my credit card. I should have that wittled down in no time. My goal is to owe only a car payment by the end of the year. I'll knock that one out after I pay off my credit card. Thank goodness for a good accountant and a sweet tax check!

Isn't the weather gorgeous?? I love the longer days and warm afternoons. I'm off Monday and Tuesday. I sure hope it stays just like this so I can enjoy some time outdoors.

I'm heading off to start my day. Hope you all have a wonderful Friday!

Another beautiful day the Lord has made...

It's so warm outside this morning! I raised the windows so my tomato and pepper plants could get some sunshine. I have to keep them indoors because the birds will eat the blooms if I set them outside. Of course, leaving them in front of the window cuts down on the direct sunlight but they seem to be doing just fine.

Get out and enjoy the day!

Aaaaaaaaaaa chew!

These pear trees are beautiful but if you have allergies they can make your eyes water and your nose run. They don't bother me but my poor brother suffers this time of year. I'm so glad the weather is warming up and the trees are blooming!

"We Track Storms"

That's our weather motto at 48. These pictures were taken the day Enterprise High School was destroyed by a tornado. Of course, we were were not there. Instead, Juergen, Kevin and I were sent to Moulton because our mets thought the weather would get rough there after hitting the Shoals. It didn't but it was a great way to waste a day!!!

I took this photo at the Moulton Car Wash.

Kevin snapped this photo of me just as I am going on air to talk about the lack of bad weather where we were set up. ha ha

This is my camera guy, Juergen. He is sitting in the truck waiting for the "big one" to blow through. Yes, I'm being sarcastic.

This is Kevin. He's a photog in Huntsville. He brought us a live truck and operated our video and reports for us. As you can see, we all get along just peachy.

Welcome to Brindlee Mountain...

I haven't posted pictures in a few months. I wanted to clear out my camera so I decided to download a few and share them with you.

This old concrete mixer greets visitors headed up Brindlee Mountain in Morgan County. We were coming back from Union Hill Elementary School and stopped to take a snap shot. I don't think I've ever seen something like this before. An interesting marketing concept don't you think?

Catching up after a busy week...

Ok. Ok. I know its been a while since my last blog post. I've been so busy lately, I haven't had time to sit down and update my site. I've got a few projects going on outside of work that's keeping me tied up and stressed out. More on that later.

My grandmother caught gardening fever so she had my dad break ground. I've got the bug too. Today I went to Wal-Mart and bought 2 handsome tomatoe plants. I know, last year's tomato project turned out to be a disaster. That's because the soil was bad. I hope these 2 do a lot better. I also potted jalapeno peppers, bell peppers and a mix of peppers. I use them to make fresh salsa. What's left I make homemade spaghetti sauce and freeze for the winter. I really wish I had a backyard that was grass not concrete so i could have more vegetables. Maybe that will happen soon.

Mom and dad came up this evening and we met in Moulton for supper. It was so good seeing them. Really made my day. My sweet daddy is over his kidney stones but now he's suffering with after affects from being put to sleep. He's going to the doctor Monday. I hope they find out what is causing him to cough and shake so badly. I don't like to see my parents sick. That's really hard for me to take. I love my mom and dad and want to keep them around forever.

Don't forget to spring forward. I'm so glad it will be light when I get off work. That means I can spend more time outdoors before bedtime.

Happy weekend ya'll. Enjoy while you can. Monday will be here shortly.

Quick update on family sick list...

My dad had his kidney stones crushed last Friday. He's doing much better and seems to be out of pain. My grandmother is doing good too. My other grandmother is well. My mom's kidney problem is clearning up and my niece and nephews are fine as frog hair :)

I have pictures to post from Thursday's severe storms. No. We didn't have anything more than rain in North Alabama but we had a good time goofing the day away. I'll download those tonight. Its so sad what happened in Enterprise. I can't imagine going through a storm like that. Our sister station WSFA in Montgomery captured some tearful stories. Keep those people in your prayers.

Hope all is well!

Sleepless in Selmer...

It's late and I can't sleep. Wouldn't you know it? I'm tired as can be but my little eyelids won't stay shut tight. I've got to be up early in the morning too. I've got a long day ahead of me. Mary Winkler's attorneys have a court date tomorrow on a motions hearing. Mary doesn't have to be there. I wonder if she'll show.

My dad isn't feeling well at all. He's been sick the last week or so with kidney stones. Mom is taking him to the doctor tomorrow (he's been already and to the ER a few times) to see what can be done to give him some relief. She's packing him a bag just in case they put him in the hospital. I sure hope they let him go home to rest in his own bed. I've been so worried about him. My dad is never sick. Never misses work. The last few days, he's been flat of his back doped up on pain meds. I know he hurts. I got hit hard with kidney stones a few months ago. Bad, bad stuff. Dad, if you feel like reading this, I hope you feel better soon. I love you more than all the sand spread across every beach on earth and then some!

My GG (grandma) hasn't been feeling well either. She's got to wear a heart monitor for a few weeks. GG's never been sick either. She's tough as a horse. Even if she felt bad or broke a bone, she sure wouldn't tell us unless it was something really bad. GG I hope you feel better soon too. I love you bunches!

Also on the sick list, my brother's kids. They have snotty little noses. I hope they are better. I do have some good news. My mom no longer looks like a little Chinese lady. Her kidney infection is much better and the swelling in her face is gone. Geez, have I left anyone out? It seems this hasn't been a good year already. As always, keep your families, and mine, in your thoughts and prayers.

Don't you just love this warm weather? Thanks Chris for sending me those awesome reminders of summers at the beach with our family. Those were cool snapshots! Tomorrow is supposed to be beautiful too. Ahhhhhh...spring is in the air!

Hope you all have a terrific Thursday! I'll try to post more when I get home tomorrow night.

Property values decreasing...

Sometimes I carry my digital camera in my work bag. Last week, Juergen and I got lost on a back road in Morgan County. We had to turn around in this swampy driveway. Before we backed into the road I couldn't resist taking a shot. This is typical county living in a lot of places. If its the best you can do, ok. If not and you are lazy, haul off the broken down vehicles, patch the gully holes in the driveway and spruce up around the double wide. Welcome to North Alabama.

the first signs of spring...

Sorry this picture is blurry. not sure what happened. these are buttercups already in bloom at dad and mom's house. buttercups are one of my favorite flowers. they grow wild near the pond. they are so pretty. this is a sign spring is not far away.

Mom's birthday...

Saturday was my mom's birthday. Our family had a delicious lunch at my grandmother's house. This is a shot of the birthday cake I made her. Yes, it says "Happy Birthday Pickle." That's the name her first grandchild branded her with and it stuck! ha ha She looks nothing like a pickle so I'm not sure why he chose that name over grandma. When I was little I couldn't say grandma or grandaddy. So I called my grandparents (mom's parents) ge-go and ge-golly-ga.

Snow Saturday?

There is a decent chance we'll see snow over the weekend. It would happen when I'm supposed to be off. I'll find out tomorrow if I will be one of the unlucky crew members having to come in and report in the elements.

By the way, this is a picture of winter weather woes before last. Not much to look at but snow none the less.

Happy Valentines Day...

No autographs, please.

Even as a little girl, I hid behind my purse to get away from the paparazzi. ha ha

Pilgrim's Pride...

Yeap. That's me. My grandmother made that pilgrim costume. I can't quiet remember why I had to wear it but I'm sure I needed therapy by the time I got home from school. :)

Its my blog so I'll rant if I want...

You know, I try to be a fair person, not only in my personal life but professional as well. My New Year's Resolution was to try and not let petty people get under my skin. I've done pretty well so far. That is until today.

I've been doing this job since 1994. By now, if I don't know what I'm doing then I need a new career. I'm a talented reporter, burned out a little maybe, but I can hold my own with anyone in this market!

To clear up misconception, I do -not- watch the competition from my office window. I don't have time to keep up with them because I'm busy running from one county to the next turning twice the stories they do. Plus, I don't have to spy. I know what I'm doing. Not to mention, I just don't care what they do. By the way, if I happen to go by the courthouse to look up background checks on criminals, its not because I got the idea from a certain reporter. Its because I know how to be a good journalist. I know how to do my job and do it well with little or no direction from anyone.

Now you may be asking yourself, why is she saying all this? Let's just say, word got back to me and I didn't like what I heard.

Peace out!

Spring like temps should be here soon...

Maybe then we'll start seeing pretty flowers in bloom again.

A long day of civic duty...

Monday, I spent the entire day at the Morgan County Courthouse. Nothing unusual about that except I wasn't their to cover a story. I was part of jury duty. I've sat through hundreds of jury selections in the last 12 years. This is the first time I've been part of one. You meet some interesting people, that's for sure. Luckily, I was dismissed from two cases because I had covered both in the news when they happened.

My home computer is on the fritz. I installed an updated version of Internet Explorer. Now, I can't do squat on line. My computer genius brother sweetly agreed to fix it for me. I wish I knew just a little of what he knows about technology. I'm what you call "challenged."

I took a few pics of last week's snow event. I haven't had time to download them to my website. I'll do that soon.

This weekend is my mother's birthday. We are having a yummy dinner at my grandmother's house. I have to stop by Kroger's and pick up a birthday cake for those who can eat sugar. Friday night I will bake a sugar-free red velvet cake for me and my dad. I tested the recipe already. It's so yummy tasty!! I'll post the recipe soon.

Have a happy day, ya'll!

Fluff and fold...

I am now the proud owner of a fine piece of machinery! No. Not a man. A washer and dryer! Even as I type this latest blog entry, my dryer is purring away. I bought a set of Whirlpools from Lowe's in Athens. It does everything but fold the clothes. I, nor any member of my family, had to lift a finger to install these babies. Lowe's took care of that for me...for the simple price of $59.00. Trust me people! It was worth it! I even signed an autograph for the young man who so carefully positioned my latest purchase into a tight fitting space. I will post a picture soon!

Its cold outside! Its not much warmer in my house. I'm sitting on my couch in front of the window and there is a cold north breeze blowing the back of my hair. I might need to invest in some weather stripping. Naaaaa...by the time I get around to that, it will be spring and time to rip open the windows!!!

I've been busy getting my tax stuff ready. I've saved all my reciepts from the year in hopes that I can get a decent chunk of change back. My plan is pay off my credit card. That will leave me with only a car payment and a loan payment (which is nearly paid off). If you are interested in helping me reduce my debt, please feel free to throw your loose change my way. Every penny counts. haha!

Well, its time to say good night! Hope everyone has a happy start to the work week. Stay safe, drive careful, and bundle up.

here is another...

The third person to the left on the front row is my brother, Chris. He was an AWESOME drummer back in the day. He won all kinds of honors and awards. It was something else to watch him play. He's very talented. I wish he still played.

now i know why...

Check out this photo. My brother sent it to me a few weeks ago. Look at the far bottom right hand photo. That pitiful looking little trumpet player is me. Standing behind me with a saxaphone around her neck is Kristen. We were in the 5th or 6th grade. Mercy me!!!! No wonder I never dated anyone. :)

washing machine blues...

Soon I will become the owner of a brand new washing machine. Probably, a dryer too. Last night, my washing machine started smoking. The engine apparently blew up. The heating element in my dryer is going bad too. I've went on-line today searching for new ones. I love the $1,000 + models, of course. However, that is not in my budget. I was hoping to hold off buying a washer until I moved. Looks like if I don't want to wash my clothes in the Tennessee River, I have no choice. Fear not!!! I don't plan to purchase until I find exactly the one I want. That includes the price I pay for it. Hopefully, I will have clean clothes again new soon. (just kidding)

My mother handed in her retirement slip yesterday at the bank. I'm happy for her! She's worked a long time and I know she is looking forward to treating herself to some "me" time. She plans to work part for a while so she can hold on to her insurance. That got me to thinking. I have many many more years before I can sit back and enjoy life. How depressing.

Saturday we had a birthday get together for my dad. We ate lunch at The Steakhouse in Moulton. Then we enjoyed sugar-free desert at my brothers house. Mom ordered a yummy sugar-free chocolate ice cream brownie pie from TCBY. I made a homemade banana split (sugar free) ice cream loaf to go with it.

If you need a simple desert, try this. You don't have to make it sugar-free but it will make you feel a lot less guilty in the end :)

1 loaf pan
a sheet of plastic wrap
favorite ice cream
chocolate syrup
bananas
cherries
cool whip
nuts (optional)

Lay sheet of plastic wrap in loaf pan. layer ice cream, bananas, cherries, chocolate syrup. top with Cool Whip and nuts. Wrap. Place in freezer. Before you are ready to serve. Pull ice cream loaf wrapped in plastic out of pan. Remove plastic wrap. Serve.

Happy eatings!

Slow down!

I've always said how terrible it would be to die in a horrific car crash. That is not the way I want to leave this earth. Today, I had to do a story about a 17 year old high school drop out who was driving so fast, he went airborne, hit a concrete cluvert, rolled his car several times, slammed into a tree and died. The impact was so hard, his car exploded into bits and pieces. Later, we were shooting video after the car was taken away. On the ground were some of his belongings. We found unsmoked cigarettes, condom wrappers, an empty bottle of shampoo and a reciept for a phone card. What kind of impression do you think that leaves? Its sad. Oh, I know he was probably a good kid, a little wild maybe. It does make you wonder what kind of life this person led. I've seen things inside crushed vehicles I never want to see again. Sometimes just by looking inside a person's car, you can guess what there last few minutes on earth was spent doing.

Slow down. Be careful. And clean out your cars!! ha!

Is this January or June?

What did you think about the warm temperatures Saturday? Wow!!! I raised the windows and let my house get some fresh air. It felt so good outside. Hard to believe its January. Back to reality as today felt more like winter. Chilly and rainy out. Yuck!

My brother and his famly came to my house Saturday. Chris installed a wireless hicky so I don't have to drag 50 feet of cable around with me. He also brought 2 cd's filled with classic country music! I downloaded several songs to my MP3 player! Hank, Conway, Barbara, Vern...all the good ones!

Later, we went to Bellacinos in Madison. They have delicious sub sandwiches and pizza. I had a turkey, bacon, ranch, and swiss sub minus the lettuce. Yummy!

Sunday I cooked lunch, like always. Growing up my mom fixed something delicious to eat after church. I can't ever remember eating out. Now, that's all we do. Here is a recipe from Sunday lunch. It's a Campbell's Soup reciped kicked up a degree! Enjoy!

One Dish Chicken and Rice Bake -- Cizzy Style

1 can Campbell's Condensed Cream of Mushroom Soup
1 can Campbell's Condensed Cream of Mushroom Soup 98 % Fat Free
1 cup water

1/4 tsp. ground black pepper
small can green chilies (optional, but yummy)

Pour into a 2-qt. shallow baking dish.
Season with additional paprika and pepper.
Cover.
BAKE at 375°F. 45 min. or until done.

TIP: *For creamier rice, increase water to 1 1/3 cups.

Happy Birthday to me...

Today is my birthday! I'm officially 33 years old! I have dreaded this birthday for a while. I should be happy another one has rolled around. So far, I still feel young. I hope that continues.

I celebrated Monday with my family. They came to Decatur and we had lunch at Logan's. Then we went to TCBY Yogurt for sugar-free ice cream. After that, we all went to Hartselle to my brother's house. My nephews got a Nintendo Wii for x-mas. That is the most awesome gaming system! We bowled most of the day! For real! I love to bowl so I had a blast. The best part? I didn't have to put my clean feet in a nasty pair of bowling shoes. The down side is the fact my brother doesn't have a hot dog stand and a soda fountain in his play room. I bet he will rig one up soon :)

Belated birthday wishes to Rhea Lynn! Hope your special day was wonderful!

Belated Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

I'm behind on my blogging. Please forgive me. The week before Christmas I was flat on my back with the worse kind of sickness. I got better then my crud turned into a terrible throbbing middle ear infection. Thanks to some high power antibiotics, I'm now only stone deaf in one and a half ears. :)

I had a really good x-mas. I spent it in Haleyville with my sweet and beloved family. The food was delicious, the gifts were wonderful but it was the time spent with those I love that made the day so special.

Friday was really great! I went to Tuscaloosa to spend time with my good friend Tracy. She moved from Huntsville to T-town over the summer. She bought her a cute garden home and began a new job at Northridge High School. She took me to a wonderful Italian place for lunch then we went to the campus for a look-see. After that we went for a drive. I got sick and began puking. Poor Tracy knows the routine. If you see me turn the shade of concrete, it might be wise to quickly pull over. A bad ear infection plus car sickness equals me with my head hung out the door. Well, you get the picture.

Later that night I came back to Haleyville to have birthday supper with Kristen, my best friend growing up. We are still tight and I think she is a great gal! We ate Italian! Yeap, my second helping and this time I kept it down :) She gave me this really cute gift. It's a rubber man you drop in water and he's grows. The best part about him? He keeps his mouth shut! haha! Thanks Kristen and Tracy! I had a wonderful time!!

New Year's Eve was very unromantic. No surprise there! Instead of smooching a man when the clock struck midnight, I rolled over just in time to see the ball drop. Maybe next year :)

Did you make your resolutions for 2007? If so, try to keep at least one!

Happy New Year!

sniffling, sneezing, coughing, aching...

It seems the cold-flu bug is making its way through the ranks. I had some of it over the weekend. I'm feeling better today but decided to stay out of work. I didn't want anyone to catch this junk before Christmas. My poor brother is a different story. He has the stomach virus. I dropped off 3 bottles of Diet 7-UP at his front door, made sure he was ok (through the front glass door) then took off. Nobody wants that mess!!!! Hope you are feeling better soon!

A week from today is Christmas! Can you believe it? Where has this year gone? My family will celebrate the holiday on Sunday, Christmas Eve. It's our year to open gifts one day early. Next year, we will have Christmas on the day it is supposed to fall. It rotates every year with the Gentles and the Bradfords (sister-in-laws fam).

Speaking of in-laws, my sister-in-law, Sarah, had a good turn out for her cookie swap last weekend. This was the 4th annual gala. I have attended each and every one. I must say I think this one had the most people. It was a lot of fun.

I've decided to start posting some recipes on my blog site. I love to try new dishes. Mostly, I'm always looking for delicious sugar-free or low carb menu ideas.
However, for those of you who can eat sweets, I will try to post regular desert recipes as well. This one is loaded with sugars and sweets but I thought anyone looking for an easy and delicious cookie idea might try this one out. I made it for the cookie swap! Enjoy!

Its all in a days work...

This photo was taken at the WAFF-48 Can-A-Thon food drive last month. I'm doing a live interview with Salvation Army Director David Singletary. His PR guy took the photo. Notice I'm in short sleeves. It was very warm that day! Normally, its freezing cold and rainy.

On a footnote, Morgan County won again this year with a can collection totalling over 100,000.

Finally, some down time after a busy week...

Wow! This has been a long sad week. It all started Saturday night with a telephone call that a friend of mine (see previous post) had died. I was getting ready for the WAFF-48 Christmas Party. Obviously after all that, I didn't go. It took several days for funeral arrangements to be finalized. He was bured Thursday at the city cemetery. I understand the sheriff and chief investigator gave a moving euology. I decided not to go. I would rather remember Justin the way he was. I truly feel sorry for his family and for his best friend David. Be sure to keep them in your prayers.

It sure has been cold! That wind makes my fur blow to the left! (my cats always hated that) I miss the warm weather, long days and green grass.

Mom came up Monday. We had a really good time. We ate breakfast at Cracker Barrell then went shopping. After a long day of spending money, we came back to Decatur and ate supper at Bob Gibson's BBQ. Yum!

Tomorrow, I'm taking Brad, John and Mary Beth to Sci-Quest in Huntsville for the WAFF-48 Kids Christmas Party. I sure hope they have a good time. Santa is supposed to make an appearance. I wonder if I should whisper what I want in this ear. Mom says I have to get that present on my own! hahahahahaha!

I got my cookies baked tonight for my sister-in-laws cookie swap sunday. i made a chocolate chip peanut butter cup cookie. Turned out beautifully.

The only person I have left to buy for on my list this year is my stinkin brother! I say that because his wish list consited of Sharpie markers and sugar free butterscotch. That is not the Chris I'm used to buying for. Don't worry! I think I've come up with a groovy little idea.

Hope you all have a fantastic weekend!

Saying goodbye...

Saturday, my friend Justin Camp died in his sleep. His wife came in to wake him up for work and found him dead in the bed. An autopsy shows he had a heart attack. Justin was 29 years old and the father of 2 small boys. He was a deputy with the Limestone County Sheriff's Department.

The end of another week...

Well my friends the weekend is finally here! This time of year though it seems like everyone is busy. Tomorrow night is the WAFF-48 Christmas party, which I plan to attend. Sunday I need to clean house. Monday my mom is coming up and we are going Christmas shopping! I'm excited. Our first stop will be Cracker Barrell. YUM!

Next week promises to be just as busy. Saturday, I'm taking my niece and nephews to the WAFF-48 *Kids* Christmas party. That should be fun! Sunday is my sister-in-law's annual cookie swap. I've got to find a day this week to bake my 60 cookies. Oh yeah, did I mention I will be working too? Busy! Busy! Busy!

Thanksgiving was a lot of fun. Mother had a very delicious lunch prepared. We all dove in on one particular dish...grape salad! That suited my taste better than anything. I'm not much for all that heavy food that weighs you down and makes you feel bad all day. Fruit is wonderful and it doesn't leave you feeling sick. My Pickle makes the best grape salad!

My animals are all doing well. Momma Kitty and Gray don't like this change in weather. They like it when its warm...just like there mommy!

Hope all is well! Have a safe weekend everyone!

Gobble! Gobble! Gobble!

Happy Turkey Day everyone! Sorry I haven't blogged in several days. It has been so incredibly busy and sad this past week.

Monday, a school bus carrying some 40 Lee High School students went off an interstate overpass in Huntsville, plunging 30-feet to the ground below. Two teenage girls were killed. Two more died later at Huntsville Hospital. The bus driver was found lying on the interstate. He has a broken back and head injuries. An orange Celica may have caused the accident. Some witnesses say the driver got to close to the bus. Right now, investigators aren't saying what connection that car has with this wreck. Its so sad 4 families will be without there children on this Thanksgiving Day.

On a lighter note, I took my first helicopter ride Monday. Our assignment was to get aerial video of that bus crash. I've never flown before! I was determined to put my fear aside. I really enjoyed being in the air although the turbulance made our chopper feel like a basketball bouncing in the sky! You really can't appreciate God's handy work until you see it several thousand feet above.

Thank you Lydia for the delicious turkey day meal! She sent a plate of delicous ham, mashed potatoes, a deviled egg, congealed salad, green bean salad and sweet pototaes. Lydia is a great cook! That ham was so juicy and tender! I'm thankful to have a friend like you!

This Thanksgiving Day, be sure to tell your family you love them! Give them a big hug and kiss ! You never know when it may be your last time to be with them.

Hope you all have a wonderful holiday!

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes...

I don't know about all of you but I'm tired of hearing about Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes wedding. Shouldn't they have gotten married *BEFORE* they had a baby? Uh, yeah. They've gone to Italy to tie the knot. Last night on the TV Guide Channel, the correspondants were talking about the couple's pre-nup agreement. Apparently thats what has held up wedding plans. Their attorney's couldn't agree on a fair pre-nup. If they are so in love as Tom excitedly told the world on the Oprah's couch last year, then he should trust that there marriage will last forever. Come on! Let's get real. This is Hollywood! I don't even know why they are bothering to get married. He'll get tired of her and find somebody else. If Katie is smart she'll be a runaway bride!

I've been cleaning house all morning. I thought about going Christmas shopping but then changed my mind. I would rather do that through the week when the crowds are not so intense.

While all of you are stuffing your bellies with mashed potatoes, turkey, and delicious sugar filled deserts with your families, I will be one of few working Thanksgiving. I have worked every turkey day since I got out of college. I don't really mind. I usually eat with the less fortunate. I always meet someone that reminds me of why I should be thankful for what I have. There is no greater lesson on that day of thanks than pulling up a Dixie plate with someone who has nothing. A humbling lesson that I think everyone should experience.

Today is Iron Bowl. I could care less but in the spirit of the game, ROLL TIDE!

I try not to use this blog as my personal issue website. However, I'm in a funk and have been for a long time. I know why but I don't care to go into it. Usually I'm excited about Christmas. This year, I could sleep straight through and never care that I missed it. I'm not putting up a tree as I usually do. I don't plan to listen to Christmas music (though I live Alabama's Christmas in Dixie) and now I suddenly hate holiday shopping. I'll go to my mother's on Christmas Eve and do the whole gift/dinner thing. Maybe by then, The Grinch will have left my system.

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

Some good news

My dad called a few minutes ago to tell me momma kitty is home!!! she was so scared of those dogs she went off and hid. I'm proud to announce MK will be served her own can of food for supper.

To know me is to love my animals.

Anyone reading this post who has 5% knowledge of who I am, knows how much I love animals, especially cats. This summer mother and I saved a kitty from a drainage ditch, dragged her home, named her momma kitty, plumped her up and got her fixed. Sometime during the night, 3 dogs showed up on there patio. By the time mom and dad realized what was going on, Momma Kitty was gone. My guess is the dogs got her and drug off somewhere. There is no sign of fur or blood but she hasn't shown up since. Dad has walked that property several times and checked all of her usual hiding places. Its like she vanished into thin air. Mom thinks she's hiding because she got scared. She hasn't shown up since Wednesday so my guess is she's dead.

My parents live outside the city limits. That means dad can shoot anything that moves! He's got his shotgun ready in case those dogs come back! People who don't keep there dogs chained up or in a fence should be disposed of properly. Somebody's carelessness cost me (and mom) one of the sweetest kitties since Midnight (my cat growing up).

She had a very loving home for a little while.
I love you momma kitty...

And the award goes to....

Today I recieved a very special award from the Decatur Board of Education. A few months ago I was nominated for the Alabama Education Media Honor Roll by Dr. Ed Nichols, Assistant Superintendent of Education. The award goes to a journalist for outstanding coverage of public education in Alabama.

I am very honored the board thought enough to nominate me. This award means more than an Associated Press or Emmy. I think very highly of these people. I am priviledged and blessed to work with such a special group.

Mystery Trip....part 2

Sorry its taken so long to add part 2 of my trip to Little Rock, Arkansas. Here it is!

The next morning, we got up, showered and ate breakfast at the hotel. I had a toasted bagle with cream cheese and grape jelly, a cup of hot chocolate, and a swig of apple juice. Mother had a homemade waffle with syrup. Here is pic of the view from our hotel room.
After breakfast, we loaded up on the bus for a 2 hour tour. Our guide, Venita, really knew her way around. She shared many interesting facts with us. One stop on our tour included the The Old State House which was once the Capitol building of Arkansas. Another stop on our tour was to Little Rock's Central High School, where Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus joined local whites in resisting integration by dispatching the Arkansas National Guard to block nine black students from entering the school. President Dwight Eisenhower responded by sending federal troops to protect the students. When eight of the nine black students successfully completed the school year, they showed America that black students could and would endure the intense hatred that racist white students could dump on them. This is The Capitol Building. It was built over a century ago as a replica of the White House and has been used in many movies as a stand in.
These are just a few of the sites we saw. Part 3 is next so stay tuned.

A few quick thoughts...

It seems my stories are so spread out, this late in the afternoon I'm struggling to get it all together. Its Friday so I'm hoping the "news gods" will shine down on me!

I haven't posted the second part of my trip yet but that is coming this weekend. I haven't had time to sit down and blog much lately. Thank you Lydia for reminding me that I need to do so (Lydia is a faithful reader of this website and I like to keep my fans happy.)

Lydia's husband, Juergen is my camera man. He celebrated his 40th birthday Thursday. Laura Beth, who works next door at WAAY-31 really went all out to make sure his day was special. I did my part too. I took him to Ruby Tuesday's for a salad, cheese sticks and desert. Happy Birthday!

This weekend is my grandmother's birthday. Tonight, I need to pick her up a little something special. We are taking her out to eat for her big day. If you ask her, she'll tell you she doesn't want anyone making a fuss over her!! I think she really does. hahah!

I'm heading out the door to try and get some of my work finished. Have a good weekend everyone!

Mystery Trip...

Some of you may know this already. I went on a "Mystery Trip" with my mother earlier this week. We had such a good time! Here is a little of what happened.

I drug my weary self up around 4:30 Monday morning. After a shower and bowl of cereal, we loaded our bags in the car and left out for Hamilton. We got on the bus headed to Tupelo, Mississippi to pick up another group. At this point, we still didn't know where we were going.

Our first official stop was at a "Flying J's" truck stop. I had never heard of it but they've got them all over the country. "Flying J's" is an interesting place. You can buy a slice of pizza or a box of Chinese and pick up a pair of pajama pants all at the same store.

After stretching our legs, we loaded back on the bus. Paul, the brains behind our tour, informed us we we're going to Little Rock, Arkansas. I had never been there before so I was looking forward to it. As long as it wasn't Decatur or anywhere in North Alabama I was game. Once we left Memphis, the drive to Little Rock was actually surprising. The land is flat. The leaves on the trees are still very green. After riding through, I wouldn't classify it as "southern."

I learned Arkansas is famous for growing rice and harvesting cranberries. This photo is a rice field just off the main highway. I snapped it out my bus window.

Once we got into Little Rock, we stopped for lunch at the "River Front." I had a hot dog, loaded with ketchup, mustard, relish, kraut and yes, a few onions. Mom had the chili version. After lunch, we got back on the bus. We stopped for a 2 hour tour through the Clinton Presidential Library and Museum. I enjoyed the interactive video showing different rooms inside the White House and the meaning behind each piece of furniture. There is a penthouse in the top of the museum. The locals say they know when Clinton is visiting because he keeps the drapes open. :)

It didn't take long to walk through the presidential library. Mom and I went outside and snapped a few photos. This one where I'm standing in front of a rusty ole railroad bridge has some significant meaning. Former President Clinton's motto during his time in office was "building a bridge to the future." In the next few years, this bridge will be turned in to a pedestrian walk with shopping vendors. The water is a fountain out front that has nothing to do with the bridge. I thought it was cool.

We left the presidential library and checked into our hotel. The good part to traveling with Marion Tours is the fact they stay in really nice places. We freshened up a bit and then it was off to the Arkansas River for a dinner/entertainment cruise. I really liked that. We had delicious food. They served the most tender cut of chicken marinated in orange sauce with carrots and peas, spicy green beans, herb roasted potatoes, wild rice, a mouth-watering cesar salad, a homemade roll and for desert, peach cobbler with cream. This is a photo I took across the river from the boat we went on. The Arkansas River is not nearly as pretty as the Mississippi or the Tennessee.

After the cruise, it was back to the hotel. Mom and I watched part of "Walk The Line: The Johnny Cash Story." (one of my favorites). Then it was time to sleep and start it all over again the next morning.

Stay tuned...Part 2 coming soon!

A blast from my past...

Girls, remember the days of vinyl? I spent many many hours with these cheerished albums. I still have these plus a stack of others. I wonder if my Disney memories are worth any cash? There is no way I would ever sale these. Please note some of my favorites...The Fox and The House, Strawberry Shortcake, The Rescuers, and Cinderella. Ahhhh...to be youn again.

On the way back from a crack house...

I was sifting through the pictures on my camera and came across this one of Emily. I took this a few weeks ago when she came and spent the day at work with me. We are on our way back from the edge of nowhere. She's on her telephone chatting and Kevin, who is not in the photo, was on his telephone chatting. 2 separate conversationsn in one vehicle was pretty tricky :)

Hope you had a good week, Em! Glad you are home! Lizzie

Where is it??!!

This is a shot of my desk. I see news scripts, pens, pencils, cellphones, hand sanitizer, cell phones, etc. Everything a girl needs piled under a lot of...stuff. And no, there is no method to my madness.

The view outside my office window...

The top photo made a really cool picture of the sky as the sun is going down. The bottom photo is a shot of the Morgan County Courthouse.

Catching up...

Its been a few days since I've blogged. I'm off today! Its cloudy and rainy looking out so I'll probably stay in and clean house. Really, that's not an option. I'm trying to pack up my summer clothes so I can make room for my fall/winter wardrobe. I hate changing out my closets. I've got laundry piled up and dirty dishes to wash. I need a maid!

Emily is in Andulsia this week training to be a firefighter. Good luck, Em!

I think the FHU Reunion is coming together somewhat. My friend Tracy is coming up that Saturday. Catherine says she is planning to go. Rhea is a maybe and I'm not sure about Kris. I think it will be fun to see everyone after 10 years.

I need to get off my lazy rear and get started.

May the force be with you...

Friday the 13th...

And what a "harrowing" day its been! The bottom of Kevin's Jeep fell out on the way to the county board of education building. We made it to Good Year before it finally quit. The belt and some other gadget broke and fell off. We hitched a ride with a mechanic who talked all the way to the BOE and back. We were just thankful to get a ride to our last minute interview. When we got back to Good Year, more bad news. The belt was to big and the part they needed to safely fix the problem wouldn't be in until Tuesday. So I had to grab a ride with another mechanic. He drove me to the office. Guess what we found laying in the roadway...the parts that fell out from underneath Kevin's Jeep!! They hope to have it fixed by the time we leave tonight. I'm taking Kevin by Good Year after work so he can hopefully pick up his vehicle.

I have to work Saturday night. I'm off Sunday and Monday but I still think it stinks. I've got to cover a memorial service for a pilot that was found dead this week. I'd rather run naked through a briar patch.

Enough about me...hope you all had a great day!

Congratulations Carrie!

Governor Bob Riley

This picture was taken last year at a campaign fund raiser in Hartselle.

Korean War Veteran Diploma...

This gentleman received his high school diploma recently. He had to drop out of school when he was a teenager to help his family then he went off to war. He was really nice and well spoken.

Morons and meth...

Somedays are much more hysterical than others. Today, Emily worked with me and Kevin. And boy what a day she got to experience.

I set up a story yesterday about a man who had a serious motorcycle wreck last month. He didn't have any experience riding one. He decides to go to Huntsville. He wrecked at the bottom of Brindlee Mountain. He slid into a guardrail and was thrown about 90 feet into some trees and rocks. He broke his back, both legs, his arm, punctured his lung, his aorta and has a head injury. Ok. that was the serious part. When we got to dude's house we were met by a woman with bad roots and black snaggly teeth. She was hiding out in the garage most likely cooking meth. 10 people live in that house. 5 are under the age of 6. The entire place stunk and everybody looked stoned. What a great undercover story for meth!!!

When we got back to the office we popped the tape in the deck. I was logging sound bytes when I heard a noise of someone passing gas. I assume its the bed-ridden guy we interviewed. You could plainly hear him gasing it up. I laughed so hard, my side hurts.

My sweet nephew Brad called. He was wanting to know if Aunt Cizzy would be at the Weather Road Tour in Hartselle tonight. Of course I wasn't scheduled to be but Cizzy couldn't pass up the chance to see her sweet kids. :)

Hope you all are having a good day!

One last farewell...

I was cleaning out the pictures in my computer this afternoon. I ran across this one of my precious Lexus that I wrecked last year. This is what happens when a moron pulls out in front of you. Bless you sweet car!

My claim to fame...

This is a picture of my cousin, Lili Gentle. She was a movie star back in the day. She was in a few films, including Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation (1962). She was married from 1958-1968 to Hollywood Producer Richard D. Zanuck.

Columbus Day...

Today is a holiday for some. Not for me. I worked with Kevin Athow, a photographer out of Huntsville. First we went to Chestnut Grove Elementary School to check on a report of vandalism. Some teenagers used 1/2 a roll of toilet paper and wrapped it around the swings. We agreed that was the most lame vandalism ever! We left there and went to Somerville. A homeowner was ripped off by a local roofer. He didn't bother to do a background check on him so in a way, he got what he paid for!

Yesterday, I woke up on the wrong side of the bed! I hated everyone and felt like someone slapped the life out of me. I crawled in the bed after church and slept most of the day. For me to waste time like that, I must have felt bad. I'm better today.

My friend Emily has launched her first web blog! I'm proud of you Em! I know you will enjoy putting your life out there for friends, family and strangers to read. If you would like to know more about Emily's "life in a camper" simply log on to her blog at http://emmdean.blogspot.com.

I have an update on the Britt Family. Tom has been upgraded to fair condition. Funeral services will be set soon for Martha. Police are actively searching for the person or persons responsible for running over and killing Martha and seriously injuring Tom last Friday. My friend Rhea is taking this so hard. Martha was the principal where she teaches school. Again, this family can use your prayers.

My brother is on a business trip this week. Chris, I know you are enjoying the peace and quiet. Be careful and stay safe!

That goes for everyone reading this.

Tom and Martha Britt...

I meant to post this sad information Friday. Tom Britt's wife Martha was killed Friday while she and Tom were walking in their West Tennessee neighborhood. Someone ran over them and left the scene. Tom is in critical condition. The hit-and-run driver is still at large.
Martha was the principal at Lane Elementary School, where my friend Rhea teaches. Tom has worked for WBBJ Television in Jackson for 14 years. When I was trying to get a foot in the door of this businessmore than 10 years ago, I interviewed with him. I remember Tom giving me a pop quiz on current events. Long story short, I didn't get the job. I remember him telling me not to give up. Keep this family in your prayers. Tom most likely will not be able to attend his wife's funeral. He has a broken leg, head injury, punctured lung and several other serious injuries.

Gloom, despair and agony on me...

Ok. So I haven't posted a blog in several days. I have a really good excuse. Tuesday, I had an attack of kidney stones. I have only hurt like that one other time in my life. You guessed it. 3 years ago when I had my- first- attack of kidney stones. If I counted correctly, I'm the proud mother of 6 stones.

My 10 year college reunion is next month. Its hard to believe I've been out of school that long. My college roommate just had her 3rd baby. Wow! Time flies! My life then, compared to now, has really changed. Then, I was energetic, positive, tenacious. Now I'm old, cranky and tired. I honestly thought CNN would call and offer me a job the day I graduated. Now, I'm thinking about going to work for McDonald's as the newest addition to there french fry section.

This morning I did a story with some of the officers with Decatur's SWAT Team. They are all really nice guys. Some, as you can imagine, are camera shy. Its amazing how school has changed since I was a little girl. Anyone could walk in without ever having to stop by the office. Now, you can't even walk into some schools without buzzing in or having someone unlock the door. I always worry about Brad, John and Mary Beth. School isn't a safe place for kids anymore.

Tonight, I'm going to Emily's for a cookout/bonfire. I wonder how well I will like deer burgers? I'm not sure I can stomach eating an animal Disney once thought was worthy of a movie.

Mom and dad are coming to Hartselle tomorrow to watch the kids play soccer. Of course, Aunt Cizzy will be there too.

Hope you all have a good weekend!
