Bronners, turkey sandwich, and the longest trip south!!

Friday morning, we got up, packed our bags and left Mackinac City headed south to Cincinatti. First, we stopped by Bronner's Christmas Store. Bronner's was founded in 1945 by Wally Bronner. When Wally painted his first sign over 50 years ago, little did he dream that his small business would one day become the world's largest Christmas store visited by millions of people. Open 361 days of the year, Bronner's features over 50,000 trims and gifts, including Christmas ornaments, artificial Christmas trees, Christmas lights, Nativity scenes, Christmas decorations, collectibles, and more.

Bronner's Silent Night Memorial Chapel is open daily for viewing and meditation. Every evening Bronner's ½-mile long Christmas Lane glistens with thousands of twinkling lights. Over two million people, including 2,000 group tours, visit Bronner's attraction annually.

We spent about 45 minutes at Bronner's. The group decided to have lunch at a German restaurant in Downtown Frankenmuth. Mom and I split a turkey sandwich. It was good! After lunch we boarded the bus and headed south. Little did we know we were in for the ride of our lives!!! Our driver took a wrong turn somewhere and ended up in Detroit, Michigan. After circling the same church about 3 times we finally realized he must be lost. Like most men he just kept driving the wrong direction until finally stopping at a BP to ask for directions. He turned the bus around and finally got us back on the road headed south. After one more wrong turn along the way we finally got back to our hotel in Cincy around 11. Ahhhhh that soft plush bed and glorious shower!! Our dreams were only short lived. We had another 8 hour trip ahead of us to get back to Alabama. More on that disaster later...

A history lesson....

This is information about Mackinac Island I pulled from the internet. For those of you who have never visited, I thought you might be interested in its history. I give it 2 thumbs up and 5 stars!

Mackinac Island is the truly "all natural" theme park of America. Limited to transportation of horse and buggy, bicycle or foot, surrounded by water, it has escaped the vast changes of time.

Its real Victorian image is preserved and enhanced by a small population of 500 permanent residents and scores of summer residents, maintaining bluff cottages in original state. Families, especially children, love their relatively new found "mobility", exploring the historic, natural beauty of Mackinac Island State Park, honored by National Geographic as one of the ten finest in America.

The calendar of events on Mackinac Island is highlighted by the Annual Lilac Festival, climaxed with one of the largest "All Horse Hitch" parades known. The American Bus Association has designated Mackinac Island's Lilac Festival as one of the nation's top 100 tourist attractions.

The residents are warm and friendly, even during the Island's brief but unique winter holiday and cross-country season. Prices are best in winter, spring, and fall, of course, but the enjoyment level never fails to put new perspective into the concept of relaxation.

When you step off of the Island Ferry Dock, you will be in a living Victorian village. Please cross streets on straight angles rather than diagonally and be aware of horses, bikes and people stepping off of carriages, enjoy the downtown hustle and bustle of the early 1800s but don't miss the beauty of the Island's interior and peaceful lakefront perimeter path. Once you've visited our beautiful Island, you will find that it is your Island, too. We look forward to your return many times in the future.

Climate

The summers are moderate, with cool mornings and warmer afternoons. Islanders suggest dressing in layers, shedding sweaters, etc, as the day progresses putting them on again in the cool of the evening. Winters are interestingly cold and by February, the Straits freeze and Lake Huron is covered with ice. Average temperatures: May 50-degree, June 64-degree, July 70-degree, August 71-degree, September 63-degree, October 50-degree. Winter holidays and cross-country skiing season, mid-December through March.

Grand View vs The Grand Hotel

Wow! That's the best way to describe what mom and I experienced today. Our bus left Mackinaw City early this morning. We took a huge boat over to Mackinaw Island. We got off the boat and lined up for a horse drawn carriage tour. Motor vehicles are not allowed on the island so the only way to get around is --of course, by horse, foot or bicycle. The tour takes about 2 hours. The scenery is like taking a step back into the 50's. Everywhere you look there are beautiful fragrant flowers, white picket fences, quaint shops and pastel colored Victorian style buildings and homes.

We toured Mackinaw Islands Grand Hotel - and let me tell you it is every square inch the most gorgeous hotel I have ever seen!!! Ornate decorations, expensive art work, historical paintings, massive rooms decorated in elaborate wallpaper. Guests are literally given the red carpet treatment --and they pay dearly for it. A standard room is $300.00. If you want a suite, get ready to shell out $2,500 dollars a night!! Guests and their luggage are picked up in glassed enclosed carriages and driven by matching horses to the hotel. They are greated by red carpet, a huge widning front porch and the most beautiful scenery anywhere!

We stayed at a place called Grand View. It was the ghetto version of anything I've stayed at in a long time! The rooms were nothing special but we did have double beds, a shower, television and refrigerator :) The best part of the hotel was the fact we were only a few feet from Lake Huron. What a gorgeous view! The water's around Michigan are blue and so clear you can see to the bottom! I wouldn't trade my time at Grand View for a night at The Grand (unless somebody else was paying).

Moving on...Lunch at The Grand is buffet style and will cost you $50 a pop. Dinner is black tie/cocktail dress at a cost of $80. Mom and I just couldn't see spending good money on lunch but a few of the people on our bus did eat at The Grand and said the food was really good!! Mom and I and 2 ladies who sat near us on the bus had lunch at The Village Inn. We split a plate of chicken alfredo. Mmmmmm it was really good! Then it was time to burn off some calories with a long walk to every shop on the island. What a beautiful day and wonderful experience! Worth every dime!!!

I failed to blog yesterday. Its difficult to do on an IPhone. Here's a brief synopsis...we visited the Soo Locks. The locks are 50 miles north of Mackinaw City. The Locks is the largest waterway traffic system on earth. We actually went through the locks which was an experience. Our boat ride was raised twenty-one feet, straight up to the level of Lake Superior. Our last stop was at a casino (can't think of the name). Some gambled others held on to their $10 haha. What did mom and I do? Well let's just say I had $10.00 extra dollars to spend the next day and mom bought her little grandson a stuffed puppy :)

Tomorrow we head south...stopping at Bronner's the worlds largest Christmas store!

Stay tuned for more adventures!

If you dont want to be mistaken for a tourist...

Our day started with breakfast at our hotel. I hate to say but northerners just don't know what a "lumberjack" breakfast consists of. We had ice cold translucent colored pancakes, a sad variety of cereal, white bread, frozen fruit and orange looking juice that was more water than anything. I digress. We ate it with little complaint.

After breakfast, we loaded the bus and took a guided tour of Mackinaw City. We visited the Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse. The structure looks like a castle which guided ships through the Straits of Mackinac from 1892 to 1957. Mom went all the way to the top of the lighthouse. I only made it to the top of the stairs. I have a severe fear of heights!! The lighthouse is just a few hundred feet east of the Macinaw Bridge that stretches over Lake Huron. It's 5 miles long and on Labor Day the city shuts down so some 60,000 people can walk across the bridge. Its an annual tradition.

Our next stop was at Mackinaw Crossing. We ate lunch at a real life saloon. Mom and I had a perch sandwich and homemade chips. After that we went shopping. We bought sweatshirts and sugar free fudge haha

Then it was off to Fort Mackinac. The fort was built by the British military during the American Revolution. Fort Mackinac is a historic landmark with 14 original buildings sitting on a 150 foot limestone bluff overlooking the village of Mackinac Island and Lakes Huron and Michigan. We experienced the sights and sounds of American military in the 1880's as costumed interpretors performed music, rifle and cannon firings and dramatic re-enactments of historic events.

Our last stop of the night was dinner at 'The Birches.' it was ok but the cook needed a few classes in southern cooking :)

Michigan is rich in history and seasonal culture. This year Mackinaw saw 160 inches of snow!! During the off season only Burger King and an IGE grocery store remain open.

Tomorrow should be another eventful day!!
Stay tuned!

North bound and down...

Its day 2 of our trip north. This morning we ate breakfast (cold pancakes and warm milk) at our hotel, loaded up and headed out of Cincinnati. We stopped for lunch at Wendys in Toledo -home to Corporal Max Q. Klinger from the tv series MASH. After lunch we loaded the bus. I pulled out my portable DVD player and watched "Sweet Home Alabama" to help pass time.

I havent mentioned our bus driver yet. I think he learned to drive watching "Smokey And The Bandit."

Our bus was pulled over by the highway patrol just outside Gaylord, Michigan. Our bus driver was eating asphalt!! He got a warning ticket for going 84 in a 70!!!! Im sure the trooper felt sorry for him and realized he was driving a bus load of weakened bladdered Miss Daisies :) haha

We ate dinner at Bob Evans Restaurant in Gaylord. Its really a yankee version of
Cracker Barrel. I had a salad with ranch and steak tips and noodles from the "55 and older menu." It was pretty good but I like my recipe much better. After dinner we drove about an hour to our hotel. We are staying just a few feet from Lake Huron. Its not at all 5 stars but its comfy and the scenery is gorgeous! How many times in my life will I ever be able to say I touched the waters of Michigan.

The scenry up north is very different from Alabama. The land is flat, there are no brick buildings or brick homes. The people do not have central heat and air. However, the pine trees are gorgeous!!! They have beautiful spruce and fur trees. The food is typical northern food. No sweet tea, grits, biscuits or cornbread. Fried chicken is reay baked with a bread crumb topping and there seems to be a huge lack of fruit. Makes you miss the luxuries of the south- like heat and humidity!!

Tomorrow us a busy day! More later but want to leave skme assorted and random conversations i heard on the bus today! Enjoy!

Between 2 women near the middle isle "Is your husband dead? Not yet"
The woman sitting next to me talking to my mother about her son's business "I think he used to buy drugs from my son." Turns out her son is a pharmacist.
The same woman as we are driving to our hotel. "Lord I see the Atlantic Ocean." Keep in mind we are in Michigan. It was the Great Lakes!!

Pink socks and Bingo

Our day started early. Mom and I were up and gone by 6:45 am. Several of the people on the trip met at church this morning for a short devotional and communion. Then it was off to Traders and Farmers Bank parking lot where we loaded on to our tour bus to meet with other members of our group. We made a second stop in Double Springs and Addison to pick up the rest of our group. After a a winding trip through the backroads of Winston County (can we say car sick?) we finally hit the interstate in Cullman headed north. Our tour guides gave out goody bags with numbers stapled to the bag. That number assigned is for door prizes. Im proud to say I won a pair of pink ankle socks :) Then we played a riviting game of Bingo. I won a cookie tray. Maybe my mom will win cookies to go on the tray next time we play!

We stopped at McDonalds in Franklin, KY for lunch. A tour group from Chilton County was there too so you can imagine the half educated fry girl behind the counter was anything but happy to see a group of "55 and over men and women" plus a 35 year old tag along crowd through the door. After lunch we got back on the bus and drove north again on the interstate. We passed through Louisville, KY and then on to Cincinati, Ohio. We stoppd for dinner at Cracker Barrel and then settled into our hotel for the night.

I am traveling with some of the most hysterical women. They are retired, away from their husbands and looking for trouble!!! Haha Who knew a group of "prime timers" could be such a laugh.

Tomorrow we drive on to Mackinaw City, Michigan. Did I mention the weather there is going to be cold!?!? We just finished winter in Alabama and here we are about to do it all again :) It should be a lot of fun!!

More tomorrow!

Packed and, well, ready

I've got a suitcase stuffed full of clothes, a Nike bag full of essentials and my backpack with all my electronics to keep me busy for the start of a long week of traveling. We leave out at 7:00 tomorrow morning. I've got my Woody Woodpecker pillow and headphones ready for the longest 12 hour bus trip I have ever taken in my life!! Pray that I don't punch somebody in the mouth before the day is out or drive the person next to me crazy with my ADHD!

Check back in for places/times/locations!!!!

Vacation or bust!

The time is finally here. I am going on a well-deserved vacation! We all need a break from life sometimes to see new --and hopefully--exciting scenery.

I will be posting my travels to this blog site via IPhone. Pictures will likely come later. Why am I blogging on vacation you might ask???? I'm going to have some free time on my hands as we travel so it gives me something to do rather than bother the person next to me :)

Hope everyone has a safe week!

An innocent night out turns tragic...

Who would have thought a Friday night out on the town would turn deadly? I doubt the young couple who were enjoying being together ever thought it would be their last time.

One of the drawbacks to my job is having to report on something that you yourself don't understand and find so terribly tragic that it brings tears to your eyes as you quietly cry over someone you've never met.

Last weekend, 2 Grissom High School teens were hit by a drunk driver and killed on Airport Road in South Huntsville. Friends of the young couple set up this moving memorial close to the crash site. They hung pictures, wrote messages, laid flowers and left momentos. 2 crosses poke up from the earth as a reminder of a loss so senseless it can hardly be described in words.

I am a stranger to these people. I did not know either one of the teens killed. As I stood at the memorial, it became obvious how popular and well-loved these 2 individuals were. Friends and complete strangers stopping by to say a quick prayer or leave something as a token of thought and love.

I can't imagine what it must be like for this young couple's parents, grandparents, sisters, brothers, friends, etc. How terrible and lost they must feel knowing there son or daughter will never walk through the door again. They will never hug them. They will never hold hands. They will never kiss them. They will never celebrate holidays or special occassions. They will never get the chance to say I love you just one more time. How heartbreaking.

The driver who hit them survived. He is Hispanic with a previous DUI record. He's in this country illegally and was drunk, behind the wheel of a vehicle after causing an accident just a few minutes before this terrible loss. As angry, hurt and confused as many feel one young woman, who was the cousin of the girl killed said this when I interviewed her, "...we have to find a way to forgive." I admire her for her kindness, her forgiving heart and spirit. So few could ever mumble those words after losing someone they love.

So, to the families, friends, and loved ones of these 2 special young people whose lives were cut tragically short, may God bless you and help heal your broken hearts.

Tell someone you love them....it may be your last time.

The Weather Channel...

I'm a huge fan of The Weather Channel!!! I can't start my day without knowing what the skies hold for me through the day. Its one thing to turn on your television and watch your favorites give weather reports, its another to actually be one of the reporters out in the field.

Today, my photographer, Blake Mann and myself were contacted by The Weather Channel to do a live shot from Lacey's Spring in Morgan County. An E-F1 tornado blew through that area Thursday night causing significant damage. I have to admit, Blake and I ROCKED!!! The shooting was excellent and the reporting was above par ;) It was the most awesome feeling in the world to know you are live all over the country!!! Very few opportunities come along in life and when one does, its a great feeling to know you accomplished something that rewarding.

I admit, it was a little sad that my parents and my grandmother missed the report. Maybe next time, mom! :)

John and Kate...The Big Split?

I've admitted in the past that I enjoy reality television. I am a fan of the TLC hit "John and Kate Plus 8." It's a cute show but often it leaves me with a headache or itching to change the channel. Kate is an obnoxious husband hater and John is a hen pecked moron scared of his own shadow. Recently, I read where the couple, who are parents of 2 sets of multiples, is heading down divorce row. Its really not a surprise. Here's what one recent blog post said, "The interactions of Jon and Kate have morphed from realistic bickering to downright mean grousing on Kate's part." Seems there's trouble in paradise. The final episode of the season is next Monday night. At which point, we'll find out the fate of this once cute family.

And the crowd cheers with anticipation...

Ok maybe not so much. Its been WAY too long since my last post. I know that because Lane reminded me that I have neglected my fans. Honestly, I think he's the only one who reads this thing. I often think of posting but by the time I remember to do so, its time to go home. I don't want to log on to my computer then.

I have many things to post so give me time. I promise to get er done!

That little Geko!

I know you have all been sitting on the edge of your seats terrified that I might not update the latest drama with my car accident. Ok, I doubt anyone cares but if you do, here goes the story -- the shortened down version anyway.

My car was totaled out by the insurance adjuster. A week and 2 days AFTER the accident I finally get it verified that the guy who ran the stop sign and caused all of this is, after all, insured!! It took threatening the life of a Geko to get that confirmed but in these hard times a girl's gotta do, what a girl's gotta do! Geico is, as we speak, getting the paper work together and preparing to cut me a nice lump check for my trouble. That money will be spent on a new car and a credit card pay off ;)

What kind of car interests me? I love the 09 Hyundai Sonata Limited. The 09 Mazda 6 is a HOT ride and the Nissan Altima is still a winner in my opinion. I have several points of interest to consider. One being gas mileage, of course, and warranty. Hyundai sports a 100 thousand mile power train warranty. Mazda has a 5 year and Nissan a 36,000. When I am feeling better I plan to do some comparison buying. Hopefully I'll get a good deal...

Stay tuned to find out which one I decide to go with!

Why you DON'T run a stop sign idiot!

Wednesday night I was involved in a nasty wreck. I was stopped to let a car go by so I could turn left. I looked over and saw a Blazer run through the stop sign. An on-coming car t-boned the vehicle causing him to roll over the top of my car. I should have punched the driver in the mouth when I had the chance! Turns out he has "coverage and liabilty" issues.

Sweet for the sweet?

I'm like my daddy in more ways than one! It's something I've always been very proud of. My dad is not only dashingly handsome he's a gutsy fella as well. But of all the wonderful traits I could have inherited high blood sugar isn't the one I would have chosen. My dad found out he was diabetic years ago through a routine check up. He's very very disciplined with his eating too. My mother makes sure he stays on track by preparing foods and treats he can enjoy. He checks his sugar at least 3 times a day and he doesn't look twice at a pie or cake. I too battle keeping the sugar level in check. Sweets are not my passion and I rarely enjoy eating them. What I crave is something I always heard was good for you -- fruit!!! I don't just mean the occassional apple or orange either. I'm talking about a full out attack!!! I've been known to eat a basket of apples in one sitting. When I was a kid I could strip a plumb tree like a goat on a 10 day fast!!! I've always loved fruit but now I find its harder for me to feast on without paying the price. So hence the reason for this blog.

It's time to trim back my wicked ways and do something good for myself. I need to drop 30 pounds and get my sugar under control...not only for my own health but because there is way to much of me to love these days :) Don't believe me? Let me walk away from you and you will see what I'm talking about. The only way I can stay accountable for my fruit obsession is by posting my daily habits on this site. It may bore you, it may thrill you. It's got to be done!!

So I have enlisted help and adopted a new menu that encorporates all the healthy eating you can stand into meals and snacks. It's a no brainer! Everything is planned out for you. You follow the menu it does all the work! The good part -- its foods I love! The bad part -- execise is a MUST but thankfully not everyday of the week. That part you will probably see me struggle with.

The question here is -- can she do it? If you've read this blog before know for a fact that I CAN! I look forward to the challenge and tracking my progress. And as I go along I will tell you more about this "health eating plan" and hope it interests others to take that step as well.

So stay tuned and stay well!

Got gas?

Caught your attention didn't I?

For the past several weeks I've been in amazement over the shortage of gas in North Alabama. I realize its been a problem in other places too like Nashville, Atlanta, etc but since I work and live here I notice it more.

It all started with Hurricane Ike. People were running like mad to fill up before the storm hit. I am one of those crazy people. I called everybody I knew and told them if you need gas you better go now. By the end of the day, gas stations were out. Some still don't have fuel today. Along Highway 53 in Madison County, several stores like BP, Chevron, Exxon and Stop and Save still have plastic bags tied to the pumps. In Meridianville, Jet Pep and Raceway, which had received a shipment of fuel shortly after Ike, are out again. Some gas stations have a short supply of regular but no mid-grade or premium. When did fuel become short supply here in the great United States? We have oil refineries --they are up and going--so where are the fuel trucks? Why is it taking so long to relieve these gas stations? It's ridiculous to drive all over for a tank of unleaded regular. What is our world coming to?

And on the subject of fuel, the cost for gasoline is ridiculous. Gas gouging was huge when Ike hit. A month later, it's still high. Look at the economy. We are spending billions to bail out failing banks and mortgage companies. It's not fair! No one bails me out when I overspend. So here's my opinion - lower the gas price back where it belongs. It shouldn't cost me $50.00 to fill up. I remember in college paying 99-cents a gallon. Drop the pice for fuel and everything else will come down to.

Why am I on a rant? I went to the grocery store tonight and have you checked the price for produce, orange juice, milk, bread, eggs, meat? I don't know about you but my paycheck is hard to earn and what little I have after paying bills doesn't stretch THAT far. I can't imagine having a family of 5 like my brother. Bless ya Chris!!!!!

Pray for our world and the so-called great thinkers making decisions on how to run it!

Are those teeth marks on your backside?

My wise mother always preached to me and my brother growing up that if you do something wrong to a person it will come back to bite you in the rear end. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't.

If you read my previous blog entry it didn't take you long to realize how furious I was over the incident with the talk show host. So were his listeners, or so I learned today. A number of my devoted fans called in to say they didn't approve of this talk show host tearing me down over the radio. And that no one deserved that kind of personal attack. I thank those people who stood up for me. As irritating as this job can be at times, its the viewers who think of you as family that make it all worth the while.

Let me say for the record, I enjoy talk shows. In fact, I wrote a 50 page paper in college related to talk shows because I always wanted to be a host. What I don't approve of is tearing a person down. Talk radio should be more to discuss the issues, a sounding board for today's hot topics. Instead, this person used his show to degrade someone who had done nothing at all to him. So, yes you could say he has lost some listeners and perhaps its because he opened his big mouth one to many times.

Wishing you a drama free day!

You're walkin on the fightin' side of me!

I've always been the kind of girl that if I had something to say, I said it directly to the person it was intended. Not everyone is like that. I found out by being publicly humiliated on the air waves today. And as Gary Allan's song goes, "Life ain't always beautiful." Now because the situation has been resolved I will not use names or station call letters. This is simply me venting on my personal blog about a truly unprofessional talk show host and his small time producer.

I was assigned to cover a political story last week. On Friday there was a press conference via the telephone with one of the candidate's camp where reporters were encouraged to ask the tough questions. I did. I ask a lot of them. We never used the interview on air. Politics can be a touchy subject and you have to be very careful how you handle it. My manager felt it wasn't necessary to air it as a story due to the nature of what was being said. So, I never thought anything else about it and went on with my day.

Monday I get an email from the producer of this particular morning talk show asking me to co-host and fill in when the regular host is off or out sick. I didn't have time to respond and waited until the next day to reply. The person who sent the email happen to be a person I know and considered a friend. I replied to HIS email by saying that our station partners with a different radio station but because we simulcast our severe weather coverage with them I would be sure to ask our new GM if it was ok. I even went as far as to ask the producer how he was doing and that I thought he did a good job with traffic reports. While I'm sending the email I have the radio station in question on at my work computer. That's when I heard my name being drug through the mud! I couldn't believe what the host of this talk show was saying about me. Somehow the political debate between 2 congressional candidates got side tracked to a local reporter who ask controversial questions during a live teleconference (or biased questions as the host repeatedly harped about). This host not only slammed me on air he read the email I sent the producer and posted it to his website, along with very slanderous remarks about me. The most embarassing part is I thought he really wanted me to come on his show and be a co-host when I had time. I've done that in the past with several radio stations. But it was just a dirty joke at my expense. When I realized it, I sent the producer an email telling the host to call me if he is going to blast me on the air so I can at least have my say. Instead, the producer said he hated to be part of this but the host is his boss and he had too. That excuse is as unprofessional as the producer and his side kick companion. He didn't have to forward my email to the host. He chose to do so to try and look big. Didn't work out for ya did it?

In the past, we've done stories with and for the host of this particular talk show. He ask us to do a favor for him to get publicity out for a march in Montgomery last year. And he has helped reporters in the past with special assignments so its not like we dont' have a working relationship. Due to that fact, I called his GM and explained how upset I was to be the target of his criticism and disdain. And that I am a fellow journalist who deserves respect. I also contacted our legal counsel. About 20 minutes after speaking with the GM, the hateful posts about me on the hosts website were taken off and the GM agreed there would be no more mention of my name on his show. I appreciate the GM making that happen. He could have backed the host and done nothing to help. Instead, he stepped up and I thank him for it.

Talk shows are nothing more than a way to feed the hosts ego. This particular person is known for stirring the pot and trying to embarass people on air. Maybe he has some inadequacy to make up for by being a bully to others. He picked the wrong reporter to play that game with. He had no right to use me as a punching bag for his show. I'm not the one running for office. I don't care who wins the race. The voters will decide who they think is the best choice for office. It won't be because some small time radio talk show host put his uninteresting 2 cents worth in on a morning show.

Now don't get me wrong. I'm not totally innocent in all this. I asked the questions but I could have asked them differently, without the hard edge. I was just doing my job but I realize I can be somewhat blunt when I want. I certainly don't want anyone thinking I have an opinion on any race, so I contacted the candidates camp and apologized if I stepped out of line. If I'm wrong, I say I'm wrong.

What happened today with this talk show hosts words, though, hurt my feelings and embarassed me. He didn't just slash my name to shreds but he also gave the station I work for a black eye. To think that someone would talk trash about you --especially someone you've helped in the past and never been anything but nice to--is totally uncalled for. It takes a person of little character to tear down someone's good name just to try and build up their own self worth.

So to this small time, inadequate, lame talk show host, thanks for the free PR! You know what they say...the more you talk about someone the more interest it generates with people and that equals more viewers for ME!!

So keep the insults rolling. One day you just might find yourself in some deep legal trouble.

Peace out!

Meow, meow, meow, meow, er, you know the song

Thought you might want an update on the kitties (or not). Lane thinks he's found a home for these fuzzy little stinkers (and I mean that literally). A lady who takes in unwanted and homeless animals has expressed interest. She works to find good families to take care of them. Good for her! She hasn't picked them up yet but he's hoping she does so anyday. It's not too late if you change your mind :)

Meow!

Music greats and a charitable weekend...

I love old school country music. Don Williams, Belamy Brothers, Tanya Tucker, Alabama, Hank Williams Jr., Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette just to name a few. Does anyone else remember the days of "Hee Haw?" That was a Saturday night tradition growing up. Mom would cook dinner first. We would sit around the table, eat and talk about the day. Then, we would help clean up and after Lawrence Welk, mom, dad Chris and I would grab a place in the den and watch "Hee Haw." Sunday night after church we would eat a banana sandwich and Funyun Rings and watch "Battlestar Gallatica" and "Buck Rogers." Doesn't get much better!!!! I miss those days.

I have really enjoyed this summer. The weather has been HOT but I'm that strange kind of person that lives for long sizzling days. Speaking of which, this Sunday I got the chance to attend the Emergency Medical Services Challenge at Milton Frank Stadium in Huntsville. It was a charity race between HEMSI, State Troopers, Huntsville Fire and Rescue, Madison County Sheriff's Department and Huntsville Police. Due to a little partying the night before, MCSD and HEMSI had to drop out of the race. :) One of the local car companies donated a "gently" used Ford Taurus for the EMS team to compete in. Picture this -- high speed racing cars, souped up go carts...and a 4 door family sedan . I think the best time for any of the drivers on the EMS team was 54 seconds. Not bad considering a Taurus isn't exactly a racing machine! The best part, the day was for a good cause and everybody had fun! Congratulations to the State Troopers for winning. They get there practice on the interstates! ha/ha Also kudos to Tyler! You did a great job on your first race!

Local tie to the Olympics...

So its after 10 pm and I'm sitting in the newsroom waiting for the Olympics to finish up. We can't go on until today's events wraps up. The schedule says 11:30. YUCK! However, makes for good overtime :)

This is a picture of my friend, and former Decatur Bureau Photographer, Juergen Beck. He is in Beijing shooting video for the Olympics. What a cool job! I'm very proud of him. He jumped out of television news to start his own production company. Looks like his hard work has paid off. Congrats JB and have fun!!

Does America REALLY have talent?

I'm sitting in the newsroom waiting for my 10:00 spot on the news. Playing on NBC is "America's Got Talent." Some of the people on there are so gifted. Then there are others that are, well, not so much!

I know its been a long time since my last post. My excuse is this. I don't really have one other than just being lazy. As with every post I will make this solemn promise -- I will try harder!

Is it hot enough for you? I know it is for me but I'm one of those strange people who LOVES summer in the south! The heat and humidity beats freezing to death. I've never been much for cold weather. Makes my old bones hurt and gives me static in my hair :) No woman wants that!?!?!

I spent most of the day at the Moontown Airport. 2 people died in a plane crash just west of there. Very sad. No matter how many tragic and bad scenes you go out on it never gets easier. In fact, it gets tougher. Makes you realize how precious life is. You should love everyday given you and embrace the ones around you that mean the world to you.

Fresh garden vegetables are by far the best invention EVER! I brought home a basket of grandma grown tomatoes, corn, watermelon, peppers and peaches. I've so enjoyed reaping the benefits of her gardening. SO delicious and much better than even what you buy at the farmer's market -- not to mention its FREE!!!!

Are you in the market for a kitty cat? Lane has 5 snuggly little ones he's more than willing to give away to a good home. If you are like me and have cat related allergies, he'll even tie a Benadryl around kitties neck. Let me know if you want one. It will be the best investment you ever make (ok not really but he desperatly needs to get rid of the kitties and doesn't want to have to drop them at the animal shelter).

Hope everyone has a good "hump day!"

Not just another fish tale

I caught this spotted catfish out of my parent's pond Mother's Day Weekend! It weighs just a few pounds but it's a fish none the less. Thanks dad for taking it off the hook for me :)

The "big" catch...

Last Saturday, my brother and I went fishing at Flint Creek. We had a blast! The weather was warm and sunny. We had a boat full of crickets -literally Chris spilled them :) and I packed sandwiches and Funyun rings which we forgot to eat. I wanted to show you the "big catch." It's a 2 pound limb that I'm proud to say was quiet a challenge to reel in :) Enjoy!

Happy Memorial Day everyone! Hope you enjoyed some delicious bar-b-q, potato salad and a slice of apple pie. I worked. What's new?

Sunday thoughts...

Saturday we such a beautiful day! It was a little chilly to me, especially in the shade but gorgeous weather just the same.

The healthy eating plan is going well. Can't complain when I step on the scales. The weight isn't coming off quiet as fast as last year but that is partly because I haven't had time to walk or get on the elliptical. That's ok. I am a busy girl and sometimes can't fit everything I need to do into 24 hours. I really could use about 26 ha/ha My mom calls it poor time management skills. I call it just having skills :)

My windshield finised cracking yesterday. I will have to get it replaced hopefully tomorrow. I've got a dentist appointment early Tuesday and won't have that much time when I get back, if any. Not to mention I need 4 new tires and the bumper fixed where some moron backed into me a few months ago.

So let's see what's on today's menu.

I had a bowl of Fiber One cereal today (just 1 cup with skim milk). I have discovered it is delicious and actually has more fiber than oatmeal and its a good swap through the week. For a snack I ate the rest of my grapes in the fridge. I'm going to blend me a fruit smoothie at some point today but that might not be until later this evening. I'm thinking about having lunch (still the health eating way) at O'Charley's this afternoon. I'm tired of eating here so I think I will let somebody else cook for me. :)

2 days in 1...

I'm a day behind on posting. I had to go to court in Morgan County yesterday on an ID theft case from 2 years ago. Then I had run home, eat lunch, and head to work. I was a busy girl!

My healthy eating plan is going well. I'm eating the same type foods and seeing results on the scales. Isn't that what its all about??? :)

I'm on call this weekend and really have no plans of using my cheat day. I haven't lost enough weight yet to do that. I am banking on next Thursday night to ea something very yummy -- like boneless chicken tenders smothered in Daytona Sauce.

Today's food craving - chicken tenders

What do you expect? I'm only human!!

Normally I end my blog entry with a food craving of the day. Not today. The third day is always the toughest. I'm usually out of the newsroom and busy but on Wednesday I'm stuck inside working on my franchise piece. Since I'm finished writing, I have plenty of time to kill so what crossed my mind???? Peanut butter. I wouldn't dare dip into the jar but just to think about it brings peace to my soul! No matter how much I love fresh fruits and vegetables nothing takes the place of good ole comfort food. As much as I am craving it, I wouldn't dare touch it!! I'll save a tablespoon for a cheat day. That will give me something to look forward to.

I had a surprise arrive to the newsroom today. Beautiful yellow roses! Awwwwwwww! That was so sweet! E2 you made my rainy day sunny! Thanks so much!!!

Today's menu:

Breakfast -- oatmeal with fruit
snack -- blueberry smoothie
lunch -- salad with tomatoes, 3 T ranch dressing, 1 cup strawberries, 2 boiled eggs
snack -- banana
snack -- 2 apples
dinner -- chicken flavored brown rice, tomatoe, cantaloupe, 2 boiled eggs

Tasty huh? ha/ha May seem skimpy but really tasty! Get on board! The 3rd day is a drag but don't let it get you down. It will be much easier tomorrow :)

1 1/2 pounds lighter...

You are not supposed to weigh for 9 days but I am one of those people who just has to "be in the know." I've already lost a pound and a half. Not bad for a day's work :)

I got up early and cleaned house. That was my exercise for today. I washed clothes, ran the vacum, dusted, ironed, cleaned my kitchen and a few other odds and ends. Remember, keep moving! That's key to any successful health plan.

My day's menu:

Breakfast - 1 cup oatmeal with banana and strawberries
Lunch - salad from Steak Out with Ranch dressing (remember only 3 Tablespoons of fat a day)
snack - blueberry smoothie
dinner - 1 cup brown rice (Uncle Ben's 90 second kind), 1 cup cantaloupe and an apple

I'm full and quiet content. It helps to plan ahead and bring dinner. Do I miss my peanut butter, yes but I can live without it. Thanks Lane for the heads up. He told me peanut butter is what football players eat to fatten up. I'd make one heck of a line backer right now!!!! ha/ha Where do I sign up coach? :)

***important note***
The author of Fat Smash has put out an updated version of his book. It gives a little more information on the detox phase along with a few more sample menus. It's basically still the same format just slightly revised.

Happy eatings!

Happy Birthday!

Today is my niece's birthday. She turned 5. Happy Birthday Mary Beth!

Time for a change...again!

Once more, I am fighting the "battle of the bulge." Ok more like a non-stop war these days. If you remember this time last year, I dropped about 30 pounds on "The Fat Smash Diet." I gained that back plus some, I'm ashamed to say. When my schedule changed to a split shift, my metabolism went into the basement. Well, that's part of it. The other half of the story is everything I've been eating since. Peanut butter and I became very good friends shortly after. Last night, I had to end that sticky love affair and say goodbye to my favorite jar of Jiff. It was difficult but I feel certain it was the right move. Eating an entire jar of my favorite spread really was starting to show up in places I would rather not share :)

I've mentioned this already but feel its worth repeating. I LOVE Fat Smash because its easy. Plain and simple. I like fresh fruits, vegetables, milk, yogurt, and brown rice so its no problem for me to stick to it during the 9 day detox phase. I have my "built in" cheat day and I take advanatage of a FEW favorties then. The next day, I'm back on it.

I realized sleeping until 11 on Monday and Tuesday morning wasn't helping me at all. I need a regular schedule so today I got up early and exercised, kist like I would at the end of the week when I work a dayside schedule. I cleaned house after never giving myself a chance to be still. Remember if you move it you will lose it!!! Also, I find blogging about my weight loss experience helps me stay on track. It holds me accountable for the foods I stick in my mouth. Plus I love the feedback for those of you faithful enough to still log on and check this thing.

Like last time, I ate what I wanted before I started back on my healthy eating plan. It helps get the cravings out of my system. Today was very easy and I enjoyed the foods I ate. Remember, the 9 day detox plan helps get rid of the water weight and you can really shed some pounds in that amount of time -- in a healthy way!

Here's what I ate today...

Breakfast - 1 cup oatmeal with half banana, 2 cut up strawberries and a splash of milk
snack- I had the other half of my banana
lunch- Blueberry Smoothie (1/3 cup frozen blueberries, 1 container of blueberry yogurt and 1/3 cup skim milk) YUM!
dinner - 2 boiled eggs, tomatoes and a small salad with cut up apples and unsweet tea with lemon

If you want to participate along with me, join in. You can check past blogs to find out more about the plan. I will be posting everyday so you can see how its going.

Wish me luck -- again!

My weight -- 1** (seriously people. I didn't tell you the last time either)
Today's food craving - bagel

Stop! Put your hands where I can see them!

Ok. I am no crime fighter. And after last week, my respect for law enforcement went up a notch. If you haven't heard my photographer, Ben and I foiled a burglary. Want the details? Sure you do!

Thursday, the owner of former "Sister Gooch Restaurant" in Huntsville called to say that someone had stolen over $300,000 worth of equipment, furniture, silverware, etc from inside the closed business. She was desperate for help and wanted information on anybody who may have been seen around the area. She even went as far as sleeping in her car outside to try and catch the theives. We went inside with her, did an interview, shot video. We were there for over an hour. When we were finished, we loaded our gear and pulled around back. We see a beat up old van pulled in backwards and a door (the only one with a broken lock) standing wide open. We asked three men standing there what they were doing. One said he had been told to come by and pick up some equipment. We knew that was a lie considering not much was left inside (we think they came back to strip the expensive light fixtures and iron railings). The owner starts crying hysterically and asks Ben to call 911. She is so distraught she can't speak. Ben takes the phone and tells the dispather what is going on. One of the suspects comes to the door of our vehicle and tries to tell me his story (while blocking my door). I got out and started questioning what he was saying. Ben gets a license plate number and gives the dispatcher a description of the van and the suspects. We pinned them in with our vehicle but they manage to pull out around us. The owner and I stand in front of the van. One of the suspects starts walking off. Ben goes around the front of the store to try and stop him (all the while staying on the phone with 911). I call an investigator to tell him what is happening. While I am talking to him and trying to console the owner, a second suspect tries to get away. I told the driver of the van to put his hands on the steering wheel where I could see them. Left the owner there with him and took off running after the suspect in blue (that we lovingly labled "Pookie.") When I get around the corner, a Huntsville Police Investigator gets out of the car, draws his gun and puts the suspect down on the ground. He arrests the driver, puts him in handcuffs and gets him to the ground. The investigator I was on the telephone with goes after the 3rd suspect, finds him in the woods near a pre-school, draws his gun and makes an arrest.

Ironiaclly, Investigators found the stolen restaurant equipment at a warehouse on Oakwood Avenue and were able to return most of it to the owners. In the end, we kept 3 crooks from running away and helped solve a big burglary ring. It was pretty cool!

If you want to read or see video log on to our website at www.waff.com. Enjoy!

This is a promo about the burglary bust running on our station this week.

Have a good one!

My special house guest...

Ok. Ok. Stop hounding me! I know its been FOREVER since I last posted to this blog. Does anyone out there still read this thing? My New Year's Resolution was to do better about posting. So I got a little side tracked! It happens when you live in a very busy world (or when you procrastinate) :)

Monday I will greet a very special visitor to the great state of Alabama. His name is Russ and he lives in Anchorage, AK -- yes that is what I said. We went to college together then reconnected sometime ago. I am excited about seeing him again! I admit I'm nervous but happy the day is finally here! I hope it all goes well. I'm going into it with an open mind -- and a lot of butterflies in my stomach :)

I will post again soon with updates...Check back to see my progress.

Here I go AGAIN!

Think back to last spring when I posted the bulletin about starting the "Fat Smash Diet." It was a very successful diet plan that fit my lifestyle so well. I lost a lot of weight, in a healthy manner in a relatively short period of time. I was thrilled with the results and loved to see how well I did every time I looked in the mirror. Well people, its time to shed the winter pounds I've gained back and do it all over again!

So for those of you with New Year's plans of losing weight, I will repost the same thoughts, recipes and diet tips from my first go around. I like this plan because I get to eat fruits, veggies, oatmeal, brown rice and a little salad dressing. On low-carb diets all the "healthy and tasty" foods are cut out making you hungry which leads to cheating then weight gain.

Anyone willing to jump on board with me, here's the plan. I'm starting Monday so I better go get my place in line at Taco Bell!!!

Working out the kinks...

I've been having technical trouble with my blog. I believe some of the kinks have been worked out. So, I have no excuse to get so far behind on this page. New pictures, posts and drama are headed your way in 2008. Be sure to tune in -- and tell your friends to join in!

Britney Spears? I don't think so!

Tonight, I had to shoot a story for my weekly franchise, "Restaurant Scorecard" As we are getting ready for the interview, I hear, "Psstt...she looks like Britney Spears." I turn around to hear the woman contine, "that reporter. she reminds me of her." Now, I think Britney, despite her troubles, is an attractive woman. Uh, pre-Britney that is. Post Britney, not so much. I didn't get a chance to ask which genre of Britney she thought I looked like. Perhaps, I don't want to know. So, to those who are crazy and think I look like the pop princess please reconsider and find a new role model to pattern me by ha/ha

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

I hope all of my faithful readers enjoyed a very Merry Christmas! Santa did not skip over me this year, as I have been a very good girl, according to HIS list :) The time spent with my family was the best part. Christmas gifts were great too!

Also want to wish you all a happy 2008!

Over 1,000 people served...

This blog has reached a mile stone. I checked the counter and I finally hit 1,000 views! I realize for several months I have neglected my readers so if you still log on to this site, I thank you! Your presence is accounted for :)

My New Year's resolution, by the way, is to blog more, complain less! ha/ha

Shhhhh Don't Tell!!!

I'm excited about this weekend! It's going to be a very special Saturday. My 2 cousins are flying in to surprise my grandmother. After dinner, we are giving GG her cookbook, that Chris and I spent the past 10 months putting together. She has NO idea what's in store for her. I hope she likes it! Everybody so far who has read through it loves it. GG, I hope you enjoy your weekend. You deserve to have a happy time!

Meeting "The Man"

Last Friday night, my mother and I had the priviledge of meeting retired NBC News Anchor Tom Brokaw. He was the guest speaker at the Freed-Hardeman University Benefit Dinner. I had been trying to swing "free" tickets for months, being that I am a member of the media. I had all but given up hope when 2 good friends of mine from church called and said they had 2 tickets and wanted to know if I would be interested in taking them. Are you kidding???? YES!! My friends brother made a $5,000 donation to the school and in return was sent 4 tickets. He GAVE those tickets to his brother who in turn GAVE me 2. I called my mom and asked if she wanted to go. She was thrilled! We drove to Henderson, ate dinner then went to Loyd Auditorium to hear Mr. Brokaw speak. He is truly a wonderful and entertaining person. Afterwards, we had our picture made with him. He is shorter than what I expected but, as always, dignified and professional. Thanks Yates family for the tickets and thanks Mr. Brokaw for a wonderful, memorable evening!

Gobble! Gobble! Gobble!

Hope everyone who is still faithful to read this abandoned blog page had a Happy Thanksgiving!! My apologies for not keeping in touch for so long. Not sure why I've neglected my blogging duties other than I've been super busy the past few months.

As usual, I worked Thanksgiving and the day after. Nothing spectacular going on unless you count the guy shot in the nipple by his best friend after a beer brawl. That happened Thanksgiving night. He's going to live but I feel sorry for the Med-Flight crew that had to work on him. One of the paramedics told me he stunk of alcohol so badly it was making them sick to stabalize him. ha/ha Ladies and gentlemen, morons like that is the reason I get a pay check every 2 weeks.

I spent the weekend with my family enjoying some post turkey day treats. Mom had one more spread on the dining room table. Everything from turkey and boston butt to mashed potatoes, corn and sweets. Very delicious!! My brother, sister-in-law,nephew and myself played "Rook" and "UNO" for hours. It was soooo much fun!! Afterwards, I went to Kristen's house to visit and watch the Iron Bowl. That game stunk!!! Of course Bama lost. Shocker (not)! I had a great time visiting with my oldest and dearest best friend in the world!

Christmas time is nearing and I have bought NOTHING!! I know what I am going to buy at least 2 members of my family but that's it. Will I get anything accomplished in the shopping field this weekend? Probably not. I don't enjoy the crowds and I have a baby shower to attend Saturday.

December promises to be a very busy month. Mom and I are going to Tennessee the 7th for the "Freed Hardeman Benefit Dinner" featuring Tom Brokaw as guest speaker. I am SOOOOO excited! He's a favorite anchor personality of mine. The 8th is our WAFF-48 Christmas Party which promises good times! My sister-in-law's annual Christmas Cookie Swap is the 9th. Also scheduled for the month, a surprise for my grandmother the weekend of the 16th and the usual Gentle cousin's Christmas.

Speaking of surprise, my brother and I put together and printed a cookbook for my grandmother as a surprise for Christmas. The project turned out super professional. My hats off to Allied Photo in Huntsville for doing such a fantastic job printing and laminating the cover. It's over 200 pages of stories, recipes and family memories. I am really, really happy with the end product.

I'm still working that crazy split schedule and loving it! I like the fact that I have free time on Monday and Tuesday to run errunds. Really makes a difference when I need to get things done.

I promise to do a better job posting to this site. Hope you all had a terrific holiday!!!

Back to the blog...

Sorry this blog has been neglected for so long. I don't have as much time to post my daily ramblings as I did when I worked in Decatur. For one thing, I'm busy on myspace now :) ha ha My dear friend Emily set me up a page. Its quiet addictive actually. I've been able to reconnect with people I haven't spoken to in years. I used to be anti-myspace but apparently that whole theory of it being a "young person's playground" isn't necessarily true. Check me out. Just go to the myspace page and type my name in. Enjoy!

Roll Tide! Bama won today!

Seaside, Florida

Here is a snap shot from my recent trip to Seaside, Florida. I went with a fantastic group of ladies from Mayfair Church of Christ. My friend Emily, pictured front wearing the black tank top, invited to me go with them. We really had a good time! The food was delicious, the weather warm. The ocean was crystal clear and the sand perfect for walking across barefoot.

Has it really been that long?

Hello? Anybody out there or have all my once faithful viewers left me for other more responsible blog sites? I have not abandoned my website, just been busy! Lots going on in my life. Some I'm happy about, some not so much.

Let me start with work. That's always a great way to realize just how much you look forward to the day you can retire!!! I'm 33 years old and anxiously await the day I turn 65. Is something wrong with that picture?? Uh yeh!!!! My schedule officially got changed yesterday. So did everybody else with the exception of those who work in bureaus. I've worked the same "dayside" schedule for years. Suddenly, I'm going to a split shift. So instead of Monday-Friday 9a-6p (more like 6:30) I am now Monday and Tuesday 2p-10p. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 9a-6p. I would love to say I'm thrilled but I'm not. I don't hate it either. I get a longer weekend but nightside screws with my routine of watching Jay Leno's headlines on Monday.

I leave for the beach next Thursday! I cannot wait to leave North Alabama behind for a few days. I need a break before I "break." I hope the weather is as gorgeous in Destin as it has been here in Huntsville. Clear blue skies, cool mornings, warm afternoons.

I promise to blog more before I leave for my trip! will post pics soon 2.

Got some MAJOR catching up to do...

Does anybody out there still read this blog? Ha! My good friend Emily sent me an email a few weeks ago reminding me that I have not been faithful to post in quiet sometime. I apologize. I have been running non-stop since my transfer back to Huntsville. I don't blog in the newsroom b/c so many people are looking over my shoulder. By the time I get home, this is the last thing I want to do. So why am I blogging tonight? Good question. I don't want to pack so I'm using this as a good excuse to relax. Ha ha!

Speaking of Emily, congratulations on your pregnancy. Emily will find out if her baby is a boy or girl soon. We are leaving for the beach the last week of September. She'll know by then. I'm so excited for her. She and Jason are going to make wonderful parents!

Also, congrats to Holly and her husband, also named Jason. They are expecting a girl in a few months. They already have a beautiful little boy, Chase. Holly and i graduated high school together. I hope to get in a visit with her while I'm at the beach.

One more pregnancy to mention. A friend of mine from college, also named Emily is expecting. Haven't heard yet if its a boy or girl. She and her husband, Clayton, have a boy that is sooo cute! I wish all of you proud momma's the best!

Not much new to mention with me. The drama from my last post has calmed down considerably!!!! Very good thing b/c I was getting sick of it.

I'm moving to Huntsville Friday. I'm excited but a little worried. I'm leaving a 2 story townhouse for a one bedroom apartment. The square footage isn't nearly as big and the rent is high. Its in a new complex, gated community with a lot of ammenities. Its just where am I going to put all this stuff? A lot of it is back home with mom and dad (I owe them a shout out for housing it for me). I'll just have to be tidy and neat now instead of the usual. Uh yeh! It will all work out.

Did you hear about Mary Winkler? Bet she eats a nice meal tonight when she gets out of the crazy house. Matthew can't enjoy his favorite foods. There's something for you to chew on (no pun intended).

Ok. I've got to pack some or 2 Men and A Truck are going to turn around and leave me stranded!

Miss you all and hope everyone is healthy, wealthy and wise!

Tainted greens...

The past 2 days I've learned more about E.Coli than I ever cared to know. Madison County has 14 confirmed cases of the foodborne illness. They have traced the strain to shredded lettuce served from, one of my favorite Mexican joints, Little Rosie's Cantina in South Huntsville. Monday, we interviewed a 12 year old boy recovering from the sickness. Let's just say he doesn't plan to eat there for a while. I'll leave the disgusting details to your imagination :)

Transitioning back to Huntsville has really kept me busy. We are short handed so I am the only day side reporter. Not only am I having to turn 2 stories a day, I also have to catch breaking news and work on my new franchice, Restaurant Scorecard, which airs Thursday (and I have not started writing the script yet). I am really happy being back in the Rocket City. I was afraid I wouldn't like sitting in the newsroom, under the watchful eye of management. It really isn't bad. We have a lot of laughs in the back of the room and all of us get along quiet well. Of course, we have disagreements and even a few screaming matches from time-to-time. Nothing that can't work itself out. Leaving Decatur was such a good move for me. I was so burned out working in the bureau. This has given me a change of scenery and I'm glad I chose this path. Of course, I miss my contacts and I miss my old photographer (no body shoots video like Juergen).

I am proud to report no problems with kidney stones since my surgery. I'm doing really well and hope it stays that way!

I will be posting phase 2 of the "Fat Smash Diet" as soon as I get the book out of my bag :) This really is a healthy way to shed unwanted pounds.

Its getting stormy outside and its bed time. I'm logging off for now but promise to write more soon!

Sunday, July 01, 2007

Ouch!

I have not had a chance to update my blog. I have a really good excuse. Last Friday, on my off day, I woke up at 2 in the morning with the worst case of kidney stones you could ever imagine. I've had them 2 other times. This one was awful. I had surgery Tuesday to remove the stone causing all my grief and misery. Once it was out, I felt sooooo much better. Other than running a low grade fever afterwards, I'm feeling better. Going to work tomorrow though I still don't feel like bouncing around in a live truck. I have to thank my mom, dad and brother for taking such good care of me while I was sick. Why stick myself with a husband when I've got great family nearby (though they would argue its somebody elses turn to take care of me).

Since I was sick, the "Fat Smash Diet" got put on hold. That's ok. I lost weight anyway. I couldn't hold anything but popcicles and milkshakes down and when I got to feeling better I didn't have an appetite. In all, I've dropped 13 pounds. Tomorrow, its back to "healthy eating."

Hope everyone had a good weekend and got lots of rest!

Lighter and lighter...

The pounds are melting away! I'm really happy with the "Fat Smash" plan. I'm down nearly 12 pounds. I had a wonderful cheat day Friday. I think that helps motivate me. My grandmother fried catfish, hushpuppies, french fries. We had vinegar slaw and yummy deserts. I ate until I was stuffed. Saturday morning, it was back to "healthy eating." This is actually addictive. A no brainer diet.

Winkler Sentencing...

What did you think about the judge's sentencing order for Mary Winkler? I'm sure many of you have mixed feelings.

Sentencing was so much more emotional than the trial. If the prosecution had handled the case earlier like they did sentencing, the outcome may have been far different. Matthew's brother, Daniel took the stand and spoke for the first time. I thought he did such a good job talking about his brother's character, good name and the way he cared for his family. He made several bold comments to Mary as he spoke. Her facial expression never changed. Aren't we used to seeing that? Nothing new.

Perhaps, Diane Winkler made the biggest impact, though her testimony didn't do much to sway the judge's decision. I cried the entire time she was on the stand. Her words came from the heart of a woman torn between anger, saddness, confusion, etc. I can't imagine what life has been like for this mother the past year. Her life turned upside down by one person's decision that has changed so many lives.

I do not believe Mary's punishment fit the crime. Regardless of what "she" says happened, Matthew never got a chance to tell his side of the story. We only heard from Mary. She had no right to take the law into her own hands. She had no right to shoot her husband in the back while he lay sleeping. She had no right to take away her children's father. She should have been found guilty of murder and sentenced to the maximum. I don't believe she should have spent the rest of her life behind bars but I do believe she deserved at least 20 years to think about what she did.

Now her attorney's are wanting a new trial. Why? Who knows! She is lucky the punishment wasn't much worse. Take what you can get and be happy with it. Isn't she basically walking away a free woman? She got away with murder didn't she? Why drag this family through anything else because selfish motives have gotten in the way.

I feel so sorry for Mary's children. The only normal life they've had the last year is about to be taken away from them. Mary wants those girls back and most likely the judge will see to it they are returned to her. Dan and Diane will probably never see them again. Can you imagine what kind of life these little girls face? Pray the courts make the right decision.

"All you can eat" doesn't really mean what you think

I've done really well sticking to my 'healthy eating plan.' In fact, I've really enjoyed the food choices, though in phase 1 it is slightly limited. I was supposed to start phase 2 Friday. However, after eating what I did Saturday, I went back to phase 1 again today. I'll start phase 2 later this week.

Saturday was my brother's birthday. My sister-in-law ordered 3 pounds of smoked chicken with white sauce, pork, slaw, baked beans from "Pig Stand BBQ" in Hartselle. Oh my! How yummy! We also had potato chips, cake and homemade ice cream. I already planned to blow my diet and eat just what I wanted. That way, my metabolism would get a needed boost. Boy did I eat! Chicken. Pork. Slaw. Chips. 3 glasses of tea. Bite of cake. 2 cups of ice cream. About an hour later, I was in the bathroom sick! When I weighed this morning, I gained 1/2 pound. Was it worth it? You better believe it! :)

I got up this morning, fixed a cup of oatmeal with peaches. For lunch, I fixed chicken and rice. I measured out a 1/2 cup and ate that with 1/2 of a tomato. I also had a blueberry smoothie. It was really good.

For a few days, I will stick to phase 1 just so I can drop a few extra pounds. I can really tell a difference in my weight. So can everyone else! I'm really proud of myself for sticking to it for 12 days. One day off the wagon didn't hurt much and I jumped right back on today. Remember, we are all just human and we deserve a break now and then.

8 pounds lighter and loving it!

The "Fat Smash Diet" really does work. I weighed this morning and really saw results! I'm happy with the progress. I will continue this phase for 2 more days, only because I didn't feel well 2 days this week and I skipped lunch. SHAME ON ME! You are not supposed to do that. I feel better now. My blood pressure is normal again and my appetite is better. I think the stress of my transistion may have caused me to feel bad.

I will blog more about my results later today. I've got to head out to Madison.

Day 5, 6, 7

Ok. I'm behind on blogging my "progress." My home computer is down. I haven't had time with transitioning to Huntsville to pull up my blog.

I'm on my 7th day. Sunday, I started feeling really bad. No wonder. I checked my blood pressure. It was 93/56. No matter what I did, I couldn't get it back up. My mother suggested I eat salt (which I had cut from my diet). After a teaspoon full, I started feeling better. I can tell its down again because I feel weak and strung out. I know now why I've lost so much fluid. Salt makes you retain water so without it, you lose weight. Speaking of which, I'm down 4 1/2 pounds.

My diet is still basically the same, though I will admit I'm looking forward to phase 2. I hope to start it Friday.

Hope all is well. Will blog more about this later.

Day 4...

I decided to weigh myself this morning. In just 3 days of "healthy eating" I've lost 2 pounds. Might not seem like much but I can already tell a difference. I'm not stepping back on the scale until the morning of the 10th day which is Wednesday. We will see then if the numbers go down.
After work last night, I ate my usual tomato egg combo. Then, I went for a late walk. Felt good to stretch my legs. For a snack, I mixed the last cup of my daily skim milk with a few cubes of frozen peach smoothie. So refreshing and light!

This is the first day I've experienced true hunger pangs. I know why. I was late eating lunch. I didn't sit down at my desk until 2:30 this afternoon. The last snack I had was around 11. It was an apple. My lunch time is never the same. Quiet possibly, its going to become even more erratic now that I'm leaving the quiet comfort of my office in Decatur for the bright lights of Huntsville.

Tomorrow, my promotion kicks in and I start back to work in Huntsville. I'm very excited and hope the transition is a smooth one! I will miss the people in Morgan, Limestone, and Lawrence County. I will miss the people I'm closest too but sometimes change is best! I will continue to blog about work and try to throw in some interesting snapshots. Hopefully, I'll have a personal life to blog about too :)

Day 3...

What a difference a few days can make. Already I can feel a change in how my clothes fit. Hopefully, when I weigh in next Tuesday morning, I will see an even bigger difference in my weight. Even if its only a few pounds, I'm ok with that.

This diet is sooo much better and healthier than Atkins or South Beach, both of which I have been on in the past. Those diets are so restrictive no wonder people "fall off the wagon." For example, no fruit, no milk, no rice, no yogurt, no oatmel. Just meat, cheese, eggs and salad. That can't be healthy. On this diet, you get carbs loaded with fiber which is good for energy and helps fill you up. You can eat an unlimited amount of fruits and veggies. Plus, you get a snack between each meal. Basically, you are eating all day. Nothing wrong with that! :)

Last night, I mixed peaches and pineapple with skim milk and ice for a top notch smoothie. I love homemade peach ice cream. This was even better and no guilt!! I also had tomatoes, egg whites the rest of my mandatory brown rice. I was so full!! Maybe a little too full. You still have to watch portion size. I admit, I didn't get my exercise in. Shame on me!

*Rice tip: A lot of people don't like whole grain brown rice. I love it! I like it even better cold. It has more taste than hot rice. The only seasoning I put on mine is fresh ground black pepper. Try it. Really, really good. If you still think its tasteless, mix in a Tablespoon of light ranch dressing. REMEMBER YOU CAN ONLY HAVE 3 TABLESPOONS A DAY. USE IT WISELY!

If you don't like ranch...try this delicious light dressing. Remember, the same rules apply.

1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1/4 cup olive oil (extra light)
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
1/8 teaspoon salt

Combine mustard, oil, and lemon juice in a small bowl. Whisk. Add pepper and salt and whisk again. Chill.

*Smoothie tip: I only drink a cup of smoothie. I make enough for 2. The other cup I pour into an ice cube tray, cover with plastic wrap and put in the freezer. When I'm ready for another smoothie, I pop the cubes out and put them in the blender with milk. Good way to make ahead and save money. Plus you get your skim or low-fat milk allowance for the day.

This morning, I ate a bowl of oatmeal with fresh peaches cut up in it. Yum! I brought an apple for my snack. I also packed my lunch. I mixed lettuce, tomatoes, 3 Tablespoons dressing, and a cup of brown rice together for a healthy crisp salad. For a snack, I had a blueberry yogurt. Yum!
Ok. I know it sounds like I eat the same thing everyday. Basically, I do. But I like it. I have to get in a certain amount of rice, oatmeal, and milk, Planning out my menu helps me make it to my goal. The 9 day detox is slightly limiting so you have to make the best. So far, so good.

Hope to hear others of you who are thinking about trying this "healthy eating plan." If you've had success on other diets, be sure to let me know!

*Food desire of the day: roasted peanuts

You may have noticed a food temptation or desire at the bottom of each day. Hey, I'm only human. No matter how much indulgence I did before Monday, some favorite foods I still miss :) That doesn't mean I'm willing to cheat!

Day 2...

So far, I like the "Fat Smash Diet." Last night for supper, I had fresh cut up tomatoes seasoned with salt and pepper, whole mushrooms and 2 boiled egg whites. That might sound gross but it was soooooo yummy. Then I fixed myself a cold glass of fruit smoothie. I put in a handful of strawberries, peaches, half a banana, a cup of blueberry yogurt, little milk and some ice. So refreshing! Give it a try. I promise you will like it.

For breakfast this morning, I had a cup of oatmeal with bananas and strawberries cut up. I had a cup of yogurt for a snack. I have an apple in my bag. I'll eat it on the way to Athens.

Lunch can be tricky. That is my favorite meal of the day. I brought my lunch yesterday but didn't pack it today. I may have a small salad later or go home and fix a smoothie.

*UPDATE* I did go home for about 30 minutes. I cut up some lettuce and a ripe red tomato, added fresh ground pepper and poured 3 Tablespoons of light homemade ranch dressing over the top. I also added part of the brown rice I'm supposed to consume each day. Very yummy and satisfying. According to the book, you are limited to 3 T. of light dressing. I mixed a packet of Hidden Valley Ranch Buttermilk Dressing with light mayo and non-fat buttermilk (keep this on hand). I measured it out so I wouldn't go overboard. So light and refreshing.

Supper may go something like this. A cut up tomato, left over cold rice, fresh mushrooms, boiled egg whites (you have to eat 4 a day) a fruit smoothie for desert. Filling and easy to make :)

In all, this is not a bad diet. I like the food. You will certainly lose a lot of fluid the first day, which is a good thing. For those who love meat, the first 9 days can be challenging.

Today's food craving: BBQ

Day 1...

Ok. My day got off to a wierd start. I got up, went downstairs and fixed myself a bowl of oatmeal with fruit (advice: don't buy the instant kind. it's gross. Stick with the 1 minute oatmeal). I sat down on the couch to watch my usual episode of the "Golden Girls." I noticed something biting me. I stood up to see my couch full of ants. The trail led from where I was sitting to the front door. Everything in its path was covered in fire ants!! My feet and other important parts got bit! I went to grab my can of spray only to realize the sprayer didn't work. I slipped on a pair of jeans and headed to Wal-Greens. I bought a can of Raid, came home and went on a killing spree. I washed all my clothes and vacumed up their little bodies. I WAS FURIOUS!!!! I sprayed down the fire ant mound in front of my door. I hope that never happens again.

*Side note: I've been bitten by fire ants before but it is quiet possible that I am allergic to them. My right foot is swollen and red. I can't keep my foot in my shoe because it is growing by the minute. I'll take a benadryl when i get home. If I take it now, I will fall asleep before news time :)

I dusted off my scales and weighed this morning. Just what I thought. The scales registered at 1** pounds. Ok you didn't really think I would tell you?!?!?! My goal is to lose 27 pounds. That will put me back where I was a few years ago. A happy weight I can live with. One, I hope will have smashing results on the men :)

Day 1...Breakfast was kind of shot on the ant dilemma. I got enough in my stomach that I will be ok. I had an apple on the way in. I ate "fried" rice (yum) for lunch. Blueberry yogurt was my 2nd snack. I'm planning on a delicious fruit smoothie for supper. I have to get a second yogurt in for the day and I have not had my 2 cups of low-fat milk or enough fruit. That will work perfectly. My exercise for the day will be a lot of house cleaning tonight.

Hey, I know it's not a slab of juicy ribs, potato salad and homemade ice cream with M & M's on top but the food is good. Besides I ate all my favorite dishes last week so I wouldn't have any cravings through this 9 day detox. So far, so good!

Have a happy day!

More to love than what it needs to be...

Ok. My reason for purchasing the "Fat Smash Diet" book is because I'm overweight. I said it. I'm admitting it. Now I'm doing something about it. I realized just how much I've gained when I sat down in the car to do a standup for my story. Not pretty. Thank goodness the time was cut short and I wasn't able to use it.

My testimonial....I don't eat right. I skip breakfast. Eat a big lunch. Then have a not-so-healthy snack (sometimes several) for supper. Ok. You are thinking "she's saving a lot of calories so why is she not thinner." It's a bad idea to skip as many meals as I do. According to the book, you need to eat 4-5 meals a day. That's breakfast, followed by a snack. Lunch followed by a snack. Dinner. On this diet, you have to eat! You also have to exercise. Arrggggg.

I've always had success with low-carb until recently. Not sure why that changed. Maybe my metabolism is a little out of wack. Maybe it's because I'm 33 years old. Maybe it's genetics. Maybe my stroke plays a role. Who knows.

Monday, I will begin phase 1, the detox stage. May the force be with me!

I thought I would share some of the food/drinks that are allowed in the first stage:

* All fruits in any quantity
* All vegetables in any quantity, except:
NO white potatoes
NO avocados
* Good sources of protein:
chickpeas (yum)
beans
tofu (yuck)
lentils
* Brown rice -- 2 cups of cooked rice per day (yeah!)
* 2 cups of low-fat or skim or soy milk per day
* As much water as you like! (boring)
* Oatmeal - 1 cup per day
* All herbs and spices
* 6 oz. low-fat yogurt (2 times a day)
* 4 egg whites per day
* 2 cups of herbal tea per day

Foods are ONLY to be eaten raw, grilled or steamed. Limit the olive oil and low-fat dressing.

Ok. Sounds blan but I like this kind of food. I really like fruit but I have to monitor my sugar. Here are a few suggestions for naturally low-sugar fruits.

Blueberries 3/4 cup = 11 grams
cantelope 1 cup = 12 grams
pear halves 1/2 cup = 12 grams (canned in water)
cranberries 1/2 cup = 2 grams
grapefruit 1/2 large = 12 grams
kiwi 1 med. = 8 grams
peach 1 med. = 9 grams
pear 1 med. = 11 grams
plumb 2 small = 11 grams
strawberries 1 cup = 7 grams
watermelon 1 cup = 10 grams

Again, I will be blogging my progress and some yummy Fat Smash recipes. Feel free to join in. If you are already watching what you are eating, congratulations! A healthy lifestyle is good for all of us!

The Fat Smash Diet...

How many of you watch VH1's Celebrity Fit Club? I admit, I tune in on a regular basis. The nutritionist on that show, Dr. Ian Smith, has published a book, that by all of the reviews, has very positive results. I am starting the "Fat Smash Diet" Monday. I will be blogging my progress through the 9 day detox. That seems to be the worse part of the entire 4 phase plan. If you stick to it though, you can lose some significant pounds...the healthy way!

Stay tuned for a slimmer trimmer version of me!

Memorial Day...

Well, this weekend officially kicks off the start of summer fun. Many of you have plans to grill out with friends and family or take a ride in the boat on some blue waterway. I have plans of doing neither. I get only one summer holiday a year off. Usually, I take Labor Day. The upside to working when everyone else is off is the extra pay or I can use that day and take off sometime later. Most likely, I'll just take the money and run!

I appreciate the feedback on my high gas price post. I decided to keep the "rant" down because its not just something affecting me but the entire country. John and Lydia you made some good points in your posts. Thanks for the intelligent comments.

Many of you have asked what happened to my Mary Winkler opinion post. I pulled it after several hate filled comments. This is not a blog set up for people to blast others. I appreciate feedback but keep it clean! I do plan to repost after sentencing.

Hope all of you have a safe and fun Memorial Day weekend!

One big rip off!

You knew it was coming! Gas prices are 3.19 a gallon here for regular unleaded fuel. Ridiculous!!!

Winkler Sentencing...

Mary Winkler's sentencing date has been moved to June 8th. I'll have more postings about this closer to the date.
